Enlarging pattern help
 

I want to make this Nordic Star quilt block but the instructions are for a very, small mini block & I want to make an unfinished 12 1/2" block. Can someone give me the dimensions of cut pieces for a 12 1/2" block since I'm not good at math. :( I have some patriotic blocks that I will be making soon but have to be 12 1/2" & I love this block.

This is an odd ball because of the narrow center strip.
The finished star measures 4.25" square. To enlarge to a 12" finished size, (or 2.8235 times as big) you are going to wind up with really weird cutting. Like sixteenths of an inch. Can you live with a finished 12.5" block? If so, each of the 4 quadrants would finish at 6", and the center strip would finish at 0.5 inch. The proportion will be a tiny bit off, but you would get the same effect.
If 12.5 finished is OK, the HSTs finish at 3", so cut the squares at 4", make HSTs, then trim to 3.5. The little partial log cabins in the corners: the starting red square is 2", first small white strip is 2"X2", the long rectangle is 3.5" X 2"
the narrow strips are 1" X 6.5" and the center red square is 1X1
If you truly need a 12" finished and want to retain the exact proportion of the one in the tutorial, you are probably going to have to paper piece the HSTS and the Log Cabins, then join. I googled Scandinavian star quilt and others came up, but none were exactly the same as the one in your link.

If you make your HSTs 3 1/4" (finish @2 3/4") - cut 1 1/2" strips for the corner blocks and the center strips (they all finish 1" wide) hopefully you will have a 12 1/2" block. Do try it on scraps first.

Here's another thought since this is sort of odd & not easy to do an entire 12 1/2" block. I could make the block smaller than 12 1/2"(say 10 1/2"...give or take) finished & then add a border around all the sides (say 2" borders) & trim to 12 1/2". Can someone figure that out for me?

I worked with the block in EQ7. I drew it as the 4.25" finished block and found that the only logical, easy to cut measurements are 4 times the original block, which is 17" finished.

Because of all the weird measurements, (see Nordic Star 12 inch rotary cutting) I tested the block as a foundation pieced, 12" block (see Nordic Star 12 inch Foundation). The solid lines are your sew lines and the dotted is the seam allowance. If you print the foundation pattern, cut one whole block out and see if it will measure 12 inches. All printers do not print the same. Hope this helps.

Personally, it I was going to make this pattern, I would make the corner squares as 6 inch finished and the sashing as either a finished 1/2 inch or a 3/4 inch. Your finished block would be either 12 1/2 inch or 12 3/4 inch.

At the end of Julie’s tutorial it gives the requirements for a 13 1/2” block.

The larger block that Julie posted looks to be something I'd love to try, thank you for finding it!
