If you are entering a quilt in show - regardless of the level of the show........READ the rules for the category you are putting the quilt in.
I was recently involved in a show where many wonderful quilt had to be eliminated from the category they were entered in because the quiltmaker didn't read and or follow the rules. Most common was the requirement related to size. Judges don't have the authority to move a quilt from one category to another and many sponsoring groups choose not to do it as well. So read the rules carefully and make sure your quilts falls into the correct category. Sometime even 1" can make a difference. Another is
"Speciality Thread". If the rules say "no speciality thread" make sure you understand what speciality thread is or isn't"

Hmmm, if "many" entrants were eliminated due to not following the rules it makes me wonder if the rules were not clearly written or understandable. A few eliminations would have me assuming the entrants did not read the rules. A LOT of elimination would lead me to believe the rules were not clearly written or in some other way ambiguous.

By coincidence, yesterday I stumbled across the rules for a show in Georgia.
A couple of board members had just posted that their quilts were juried in to the show.

Entry Form. Fill out the entry form completely. Entries should have a suggested category on the entry form; however, final placement will be at the discretion of the appropriate ECQG
committee and/or judges.

And none of the categories listed to choose from provided any measurement parameters.

I know that in some shows it's stated that the committee/judges reserve the right to switch a quilt's category.
Others shows will reject the quilt if it comes in and doesn't match the category requirements.

I just found it interesting as it was the first time I'd seen that flexibility - putting the total determination of category into the hands of the committee/judges - in rules for a show.

In the case I described above there should have been no question as the size was in the general rules and again repeated in the description of the category.
My point i read all the rules - twice to make sure. If there is a question then write for the answer.
Some shows have flexibility while others do not. If the ruls say "no speciality thread" and the quiltmaker quilts in silver or gold metalliac....then.......

I've entered a lot of shows, but I've never seen one that excluded based on what kind of thread you used.

I made a miniature diamond log cabin with 1/4" logs, and looked forward to entering it, but the rules stated that minis had to be 24" or smaller, and all the other categories specified a minimum of 48" or larger. My pretty little quilt was 30", so it was excluded COMPLETELY! :(

I finished making what I thought was a really pretty & unusual quilt. Upon reading the entry rules, it could not enter, as it was "tied", not quilted. Oh well............!!

i would bet cash the entrants didn't take the time to read the rules.

you'd be surprised how many people either ignore rules or think they are merely suggestions that apply to "everybody else".

those are the folks who get mad at the cops when they get caught breaking the law. :lol:

I agree on not reading the rules, look how many folks don't follow the rules on posting on this board ;-)

i had to do the same thing this year too.

many people entered quilts in the "original design" category and then on the form stated the pattern maker. when i researched the pattern they didn't change it one bit to make it an original work.

then the next mistake people make is entering as the only person who worked on the quilt and then listed on the form that the blocks are from a swap, that some one else did the quilting or the piecing, it was a round robin, etc.

i could not put the quilts into the proper category i just had to reject them.
