This is a great idea, but I would prefer electricity. My husband fishes and hunts for long periods. It would be nice to have something to do that helped pass the time.

GrammaNan 06-24-2010 08:14 AM

I love your idea and am going to borrow it!

This past weekend, at a local car show, we put it to the test. Put up the umbrella (it was 90+ degrees!), table, chair, and sewing machine. I also posted a sign saying "Equal Hobby Opportunity!" with arrows to his car labelled "His Hobby" and an arrow to my Singer saying "My Hobby."

Turned out to be a lot of fun! I was tucked in behind the cars and, as people walked around, they'd spot me. We were there for three hours (there was a nice breeze or I wouldn't have lasted) and I actually managed to sew a lot of squares together. I knew someone would probably take my picture so I tried to maintain a lady like pose while sitting but... Oh, well. Here's me, sewing away fiendishly. The blue car on the left (a work in progress) is our '62 T-bird and the peach one on the right is someone else's (would you believe it's insured for $70,000!!! I made VERY sure the umbrella was far enough away not to hit it, if it fell over!).

Is that a featherweight machine?

Debo 06-24-2010 12:12 PM

What a great idea. So much more fun than just sitting there for hours.

paintedquilt 06-24-2010 12:13 PM

You're sure going to develop muscles in your right arm ;) ;)

Aunt Zaz 06-24-2010 01:55 PM

I have never seen a hand crank machine. Great idea. Years ago when I was dating my husband he was into dirt track racing and was helping his cousin who had a car. We would get to the track early and I was left alone in the stands until race time. I took cross stitch with me and completed many projects.

peyton 06-24-2010 02:18 PM

my husband isn't a car guy.....

I have sat in the miniature store while he talks 40K though.....

Log Cabin Quilter 06-24-2010 02:22 PM

What a very good idea. I am sure you enjoyed the outdoor sewing and educated some on-lookers.

Barbm 06-24-2010 02:31 PM

I often thought of taking something with me, but I'm not allowed anything in the car that would hurt it. hubby has a 65 vette and i have a 67 firebird 400 convert. I wish I was allowed to bring a chair to sit. :(

now a sewing machine- cool, but he'd never put it in the car.

RugosaB 06-24-2010 03:06 PM

I think that's such a great photo!
I know this isn't a car list but your story reminded me of my dad, who died 12 years ago and was an avid old car hobbyist since his teen years. Tell this story to your significant other:
When I was very little Dad bought the love of his life, a bright pink and white '56 Crown Victoria. He and Mom kept having kids and at one point put in a car seat for my little brother, so Dad drilled some holes and screwed it in. Mom kept getting pregnant so when she was pregnant with #5 they sold the car and got a station wagon. I remember growing up (I'm now 52) often Dad would comment that he sure wish he had that car back. Life went on, Dad was still into old cars, restored some, joined a car club when I was an adult.
Then about 10 years before he died he decided he was ready to get a '56 Crown Victoria and restore it. He found one for sale locally and went to see it. He bought it, paying more than he sold it for in the 60's. Those holes and the bolts he had drilled for the car seat were still there! He restored that thing, even keeping re-chromed parts in his underwear drawer, joined a club only for Crown Victoria enthusiasts and even went on an antique car lovers cruise.
Your photo made me think of that and how I would be overjoyed to make a Crown Victoria quilt for him now if I could. Thank you

How much did you pay for your hand crank sewing machine? I think I would like one to take with me when I go somewhere that has not electricity.

Rachelcb80 06-24-2010 04:17 PM

What a great idea! That is what a marriage is all about, give and take. Glad you had a great time and you two are able to spend more hobby time together!

amorerm 06-24-2010 04:32 PM

You're great. I love this and something I would do. What fun!!

Daisygirl 06-24-2010 05:22 PM

Great picture and great way to be together. My husband is a golfer, I wonder how we could combine both our hobbies??

Annz 06-24-2010 06:30 PM

Great idea. You look so cute. I think I would need padding on the chair though.

quiltin mimi 06-25-2010 01:46 AM

I think this is a great example of how to have a long marriage.

Enjoy the show! The day the picture was taken was about 95 degrees but there was stiff wind. That, along with the umbrella, kept me mostly comfortable. Hope a nice breeze comes along for you, too!

Actually, no, it's not hard because the feeddogs really hold the fabric steady. I was very surprised at how easy it was to sew!

A car show combined with a craft show? Now, that's a neat idea!! Wish they'd do something like that around here.

I wish! It weighs a ton. What doesn't show too well in the photo is the wooden base it sits in and, the wooden domed top that removes to access the machine.

That is an understatement! I've used the machine three times now, over a period of months, and have to remember that when my arm aches the next day, it's because I was cranking away the day before. But, it's good exercise and my fluffy arm can use a good work out! :-)

I hope you're allowed to bring something in your car! Hurt the car??? Please. If he's that paranoid, make a quilted bag big enough to hold a folding chair. Make another one for the hand-crank or whatever you want to bring. If I had to stand around for hours on end, there'd be some DISCUSSIONS that night! :)

I can really empathize with your story. Bob's best friend had a mid-50's (can't remember the year) Crown Victoria and baby'ed that thing like it was made of glass. Sadly, about two years after I met Bob and his friend, the friend died. I know Bob would have loved to own a Crown Vic but couldn't bring himself to buy his friend's because it would always be his friend's not his.

The T-bird has also been "modified" to hold a car seat for grandson. Also, I told Bob I wouldn't go anywhere until seat belts were installed.

As for wishing for a car that was previously owned, I think most of us have a favorite that we wish we still had. Unfortunately, as in your story, economics get in the way. Oh well.

I was amazed at how many people had never seen a hand crank but knew all about the treadles. Go figure!

Holey moley! I've posted enough replies today. Sorry for the catch-up. I've been gone for a couple of days.

greaterexp 06-25-2010 06:32 AM

Now that's a dedicated quilter! I love the car, but the quilter gets my vote for best of show!
If my husband could find a crank machine for me, I might go fishing with him. Then again...

Lynnc 06-25-2010 10:58 AM

I wish my hubby and I could work something like this out for us because, he like to go sailing. I just can't see a way I could sew on his 25'Sailboat. With all of the jumping from side to side when he changes direction. What a laugh just thinking of it.

I can only imagine the degree of seasickness you'd both have if you were working on one of those dynamic swirly kaleidoscope quilts! :-D

connecticut quilter 06-25-2010 06:03 PM

If you don't mine me asking how does a hand crank machine work? I have never heard of them.

roseOfsharon 06-25-2010 06:14 PM

A very ingenious idea! Good for you... happy sewing on car show trips!

montanablu 06-25-2010 06:27 PM

What an inspiration!! That was SUCH a good idea you had! - love it! When I think of the years I followed my DH all around the US playing ball (fastpitch softball), I'm green w/envy! But most of those years we had half a dozen kids w/us, so I guess trying to sew would have been out of the question! lol I'm happy as a hoppin' bunny you've shared it w/others tho, so they can enjoy their time while at the DH' hobbies :) Good for you!!

sunflower sue 06-25-2010 09:02 PM

You are lucky to find a hand crank and what fun you are having ! One of the ladies in our charity quilt group has one. She goes to truck and tractor shows with her hubby. She does the same as you, sets up her table and away she goes. She gets a lot of of interest from the people. She makes all of her Drunkards Path tops on it. Have fun !!

Nancy in Louisiana 06-26-2010 12:50 PM

Way to go, girl!! My hubby had a friend who could no longer keep his 06 Lingenfelter Vett due to illness. The friend never even had the opportunity to drive it since the Lingenfelter upgrade. Naturally, out of friendship, my hubby just HAD to buy it in order to keep it out of "unfriendly" hands or, worse yet, a total stranger who just wouldn't understand it the way they did. So, in the spirit of partnership and common good in the mental health department, I went out and bought my dream sewing machine, paying almost three times more for it than my first car (which was a VW Beetle in the late 60's). Since then I know I have put way more miles on my machine than he has on his, which rarely sees the sunlight. We are both happy. Life is good.

A hand crank machine (at least mine) is the same as one with a motor or a treadle. Instead of the rubber "wheel" from the motor turning the shaft, there's a hand crank that is used to turn the shaft. Not sure if this is the best explanation but its what I've got. :)

QBeth 06-28-2010 07:08 AM

Wow, thanks for all the kudos and compliments, folks! What a response! I think I hit a few nerves when it comes to trailing along on car shows and such. If my approach inspired anyone, I'm a happy camper. Or, should I say, a happy quilter!
