How do I draft this .... all 3 sides being same length in inches?
(Tried it with a protractor, to get 60 degree angles.... no luck!) |
You need a compass.
1. Draw the first line to the length you want. 2. Stick the compass in the end point and adjust it to the length of the line. Draw a circle. 3. Stick the compass in the other end point and draw a secong circle. 4. Where the circles intersect is the point of your triangle. Connect the end points and you got it. OR 1. Draw the first line to the length you want it and mark the center point. 2. Draw a perpendicular line from the center point. (90 degrees up or down) 3. Measure the length of the first line and find the point on the perpendicular line that gives you the same length to one of the end points. Sorry - a bit convoluted to explain. I use a ruler and rotate it on the end point until I "get there" Hope this helps. |
I'll tell you using a length of 8 1/2" for each side. You use the same method for other sizes.
Take a sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Fold it in half and crisp the fold so you've got two 4 1/4" x 11" rectangles. Unfold. Bring one corner up to the center fold line. Trace the 8 1/2" edge of the paper from the point on the center fold down to the corner. Unfold. Bring the corner that you just drew into up to the center fold line. It should it at the same point as before. Again trace the 8 1/2" edge of the paper from the point on the center fold line down into the corner of the paper. You've now got an 8 1/2" equilateral triangle. You can do this with any size paper. Just start out with a square that has the same length as the length of the triangle edge. |
Ok over my head! Bad at math! Hee hee. Glad there r ppl here to help ppl like me! Good luck with the triangles!!

Equilateral triangle is a 60deg triangle. Do you have 60deg on your ruler or better yet a 60deg ruler?

I bought the Pyramid Ruler by Fons and Porter. I was making 2 quilts that had hundreds of split triangles so I saved myself the figuring and bought the ruler with a coupon. The pattern was Twirling Triangles.

You guys are good!!!
