Same thing happened to my daughter - she even told them a minimum bid of $80 (which is what she had into the quilt) and they still sold it for less than the minimum - it seems as though some people just don't appreciate handmade quilts - I have a cousin who tells me she can get a beautiful quilt at K-mart - so go for it! I won't be making quilts for someone who doesn't appreciate it - same as sewing for people who don't appreciate it!!

When I donate something to a silent auction, I put in the first bid, usually 60% of the cost of the item. If it goes for more, fine. But, if I end up with the item, it's a $$$ donation to the organization, and I have an item for the next raffle, or a gift for someone. Most people, my own family included, have no idea how much time and money it takes to make a quilt.

CK, I'm so sorry that happened at all, let alone twice. If things were going on that kept them from auctioning those quilts off appropriately, they should have given them back to you. JMHO I also understand the giving thing - I try to give and then think, it's theirs and they can do what they want, but some things are easier than others. A quilt has a lot of emotion and love in each part of the process and that should be appreciated. I think the donation of $ is the better option for this group - not that we all don't work very hard for our money too, but this way you can control the value a little better. Big Hugs. I really hate that happened to you two times. What a sweetheart to even give them a second chance.

Give them cash next time and explain that from lack of interest in the last quilts you gave for the auction that the people who attend the event are just not into quilts and you would rather just give the money in place of your work.

Oh I so feel for you! I agree maybe just a cash donation next time. We want our quilts to be loved and appreciated, not just an afterthought in an auction. Sorry this happened to you, not once but twice. OUCH!

Is the person confirming the proceeds the same person that is the daughter of a fabulous quilter, and there's a little 'friendly' competition and they may be intentionally trying to 'push' your buttons? Can you confirm with someone else? I know that the encomy is bad, but that's really hard for me to believe, $10 and $15 dollars just doesn't sound anywhere close to realistic. |
Yep....I would not donate unless I could set a reserve on it.

Another idea is to put a minimum bid on the items and ask for them back if they don't make the minimum/
