Ever have "one of those" quilts that you can't wait to finish?
 

I bought a super cute jelly roll on sale and was excited to try a pattern at I saw on MSCO YouTube. Part of it was I forgot to change to my walking foot, which helped when I put it on for the most part. But the fabric was super thin so it didn't feed well or got tangled up, and this was a Moda line! I have used alot of Moda and never had this issue before. I finally got the top done and got the backing and binding ordered (which came in today). Now to go get batting so I can finish this quilt. lol I think I will like it once it is done but man, it has been a pain to quilt.

Anyone else have "one of those" quilts that you hated when working on it?

Yea, that's why I usually have other projects going, so I can take a break from one that's giving me fits!

I get to that point with almost every one when I am at half way done with the hand quilting, because I am anxious to begin the next project. I try not to have too many projects going, so I get them finished. I have one hand work, one pieced quilt, and a string quilt working..Wont start another till one of these is done

I did stop at about the 3rd row because it was making me ill. I picked it back up later and did it it in sections until it was done. It is such cute fabric too, the Lil Rascals line with the dogs, cats, geese, etc on it. I love the design on it but not so much the thinness of the fabric. :(

I bought 2 Robert Kaufman Grinch quilt kits last year to make for Christmas presents. I don't know if it was because I made 2 quilts exactly alike, one right after the other, or what but I finished one and gifted it this past Christmas. The other one the top is finished and folded up in my UFO pile. I just can't motivate myself to finish it! I have everything I need to finish it. It just needs to be sandwiched and straight line quilted (actually crooked line quilted as it is Dr. Seuss!) and the binding put on it. I know, I know . . . it is LONG overdue! Fortunately the friend it is going to is understanding and knows that he will get the quilt before Christmas 2012!!!

I had the same problem earlier this year, butI couldn't wait to finish it because I was so excited and wanted to see it finished. I designed and made a photo memory quilt for my BFF's 70th birthday coming up in Sept. I can't wait to gift her with it. :) :) :)

Absolutely. I made a quilt that I absolutely hated every minute of it, other than buying the fabric for it. Anything that could have gone wrong with it did. Have it on our bed at the camp and it everyone tells me it looks wonderful, but I can still look at it and resent its very existance!

Yes, I think that's why I end up having so many quilts going at once. One year, my New Year's resolution was to finish up all my UFOs. I was inspired by a young member of our guild who only worked on one quilt until completely done, then she would start the next one. By May or June of that year I had completed all my UFOs!! I was surprised that I actually could do it. By Christmas I must have had 6 projects going at once. LOL That's when I decided I wouldn't fight it and would just work on exactly what I felt like doing. It's my hobby and relaxation, afterall. There are too many other things in life that I HAVE to do.

Yes! I'm working on a challenge quilt where I was given the fabric and have to use it on 20% or more of the top. I don't like the fabric for a quilt, although I'd like it for a bag. I can't wait to get it done but I'm not loving working on it.

Yes, I have this happen to me way more than I want it to. Some quilts just seem to fly together & others are like pulling teeth. I just sent a Jelly Roll Race off to the LA'er & I cannot tell you how happy I was to see that little puppy go out the front door! I was unhappy with it every step of the way (tho I kinda liked the way it turned out) & am glad it's a gift (that's awful to say, isn't it?).

Can you starch the pieces to make them easier to work with?

Yep. My step-daughter asked me to make her a queen size T-shirt quilt. She's a fantastic woman and I love her so much but had I known in advance what a chore it was going to turn into........I'm almost done quilting it on my domestic sewing machine and I am not proud of how it is turning out.

I still have not bought the batting. I think I am puttng it off because I really don't want to mess with it. lol

Yes, I just finished one like that. Hated it once I started putting all the square together. It was a sampler, hated the colors. My DD thought it was pretty but she and I have different tastes in fabrics. Finally finished it and gave it to my son (bless his heart because now he has to look at it). Am piecing one now from a kit I got at Connecting Threads. It's a joy to work on and love the colors. It's for my granddaughter who is in law school in NYC.

Just finished 180 snow balls. Took me forever since I was soooo bored! Never again.

I am working on one right now that I have decided that I MUST finish before starting on the next. Everything that could go wrong, has, and now all that is left is the binding. I don't do binding well at all....in fact I am so intimidated by it, that I set aside completed quilts for months before attempting to bind them, and then when I do attempt to bind them I screw it all up and it puckers and looks bad. I need to attend a class on binding I guess !!

I have one of "those" quilts going right now!! It's actually my first pieced top - I had to "go big" and make it a king size, and I made so many mistakes on it, that I really just don't even want to work on it. So it and its backing fabric just sits there all folded up and making faces at me while I work on other stuff.

Oh, good! I'm not the only one! I now have final stitching of binding on one quilt; another basted for quilting; a Farmer's Wife quilt-along; a block-of-the month; a couple of purchased kits; pattern and uncut fabric for two more; and a couple of hundred 2" squares next to my design board for a mosaic quilt that I designed. Ack!

So glad I am not alone! I really should finish it but I have no motivation to. lol

Maybe I will make a shirt for my DD first...then something else. lol I will get to it, eventually.

I think it happens to all of us at some time or another! I think there are one or two projects hidden in my sewing room somewhere waiting to be completed!

Oh, been there done that. You know what is even worse? When you are making blocks for a quilt and you love the way the blocks look. Love the way the fabric colors are blending together and accenting each other. Sew all the blocks together-and look at the quilt and hate it. Too much contrast maybe. I don't know. I am hoping the quilting will make this quilt. But it is awfully hard to pick it back up and work on the borders. So thank you for posting this thread. Maybe I'll work a little on it today-maybe.

I've had several quilts like that. A friend asked me to make a quilt for her using strips of fabric sewn together that she wanted to put together using red for sashing. I squared up the strips so that they were equal then tackled the red sashing. Every step of the quilt I recited to myself "red is a neutral", which was a quote from a quilter I saw on Simply Quilts - every room in her home was done in "crayon" colors. Well, my son and husband thought the quilt was great, as did my friend, so in the end it came out quite nice and she loved it.

Those are the boogermen that usually end up in the UFO pile. If I don't like the blocks, the color cmbination or the fabric in general, I usually put it in the pile. I only quilt for myself and for gifts, so I figure if I don't like it, I don't have to do it.

Yes, I will see a class offered for a quilt, take the class, go home to try and figure it out, get tired of it. Sometimes they look so wonderful I forget about all the work required to finish them.

Yep, think we all have at one time or another. I've got so much fabric on hand, can't think of buying new stuff just yet..other than to fill in a solid color (most of mine are prints).

I have some customers send me fabrics that are very thin (for backings), or quilts made of really thin fabric....I spray with spray starch and let it dry (I don't iron it dry, since I have it on the quilting machine, it sort of presses itself..). Adds a bit of body... Sewing for myself...if the fabric is really thin...I starch the heck out of it first...I won't use it really flimsy. If I am using a satin or something in a crazy quilt or baby quilt...I add a tear away fusible stabilizer to the back...in a pinch, I'll add freezer paper ironed onto the back.

I thought Moda was supposed to have good quality fabrics. So far I have not bought jelly rolls, or layer cakes or anything like that, so I am able to feel the texture of the fabric on the bolt before I purchase. Sorry you had so many problems.

I may win the prize on this one..........I have a good friend who has a daughter was getting marrried in OCT..so I started making her a quilt, she loves lavendar colors..............that was "6" YEARS AGO this OCT and I still have NOT got that quilt finished........its about 2/3 done..........and for the life of me, I have NO idea WHY I cant just go and finish it........its like I just keep trying to forget its sitting there, on the shelf, waiting for me.... I think the real reason is that I HATE having to do a large quilt on my sewing machine, and this is a QUEEN size one.........maybe we need to organize a "work swap" so that we could help eaach other finish these thing...........

Okay, I really belong here lol.... My first queensize quilt is still not finished. Its all done with blues and yellows. I am quilting it by hand and I am sure by the time I get it done I will hate it. Its been over 6 years . I remember laying it out to pin at my friends house and her2 week old grandaughter was being passed around the other ladies as they watched me pin. Shes now in first grade. lol I do have to admit that this quilt did hang in my closet for about 3 years before I started to quilt it. I couldn't decide how I would do the hand quilting. Finally one night I had a dream that I was quilting daisys on it. That was it. found the 2 correct size templates the next day at the quilt shop exactly what I saw in that dream. I have been working slowly on this and the other day the question of the quilting on the border came up. Decided I wanted a simple leaf pattern. Found the perfect template at a quilt show a short time later. I keep telling my friends I should have this one quilted and done about the time friends grandaughter graduates high school. lol

So glad I am not alone in this. lol I still have not finished mine but did start planning another. Oops. lol
