Ever make quilt with a silhouette on it?
I hope I am describing this right. You make a quilt, maybe a 9 patch, and then applique a silhouette on it. Was thinking a outing making this for my nieces wedding gift. They love to hunt, was going to make a quilt and then applique a deer head on it and the deer would be in black. Has anyone ever made this? How about a picture?
TIA |
I have thought about doing it. Someone had a child's quilt with an elephant applique onto a quilt. Just getting the proportions right would be the only concern I have such as too small of a 9 patch with too large of a deer head. If you can sketch it out and get the proportions correct, then go with what you think they will enjoy for many years to come.

I made a silhouettes quilt several years ago. You can see it here "Driving Tammy Nuts"
You can search for it in pictures section and learn the story behind it. Sorry, I don't know how to post a direct link to it. |
Planning on doing that on the top I'm currently working on. Different shape, but same principle. Have been doing some test stitches to see what I want to use. Have a few more seams on the top to do and then will be starting my bit of applique work.

Not sure if this is what you're talking about, but I made this in 1995 and the background is all pieced and then the eagles are hand appliquéd on. It was one of the 1st things I ever made and the black is some kind of fuzzy fabric, maybe suede?

I did one a long time ago, maybe 15 years. No picture but it was a 9-patch, lap size, with an almost full-length ballerina appliqued in black over the blocks. It was from a book with variations on the 9-patch and if I can find it I'll come back in with the name and author. Anyway, I was very happy with how it turned out. Your idea using a deer's head sounds perfect for a couple who enjoy hunting.

The one below is life size, just over 5' tall.
I first made a "jelly roll" quilt (used my own strips, not pre-cuts). Then I drew out the silhouette directly onto fusible (I used steam-a-seam light). Ditto for the letters. Ironed them all on then using clear poly thread I sewed around all the edges with an FMQ foot. Batted it, and quilted it. The quilting was using black thread along the edges again - over (or as near as) the clear poly thread. Because the silhouette was so large, I also did some quilting inside the woman to show definition of some of the body parts (i.e. breasts and even some pubic hair!). The quilt was a "chemo quilt" for a friend who threw herself a "shave my head" party just prior to starting chemo. |
DogHouseMom your chemo quilt made me smile. So cute!

I've done it with cats. love the look of it.
I love applique over pieced fabric. adds another dimension to it. |

I had fun creating this quilt with a silhouette using a variety of lavenders in quilt blocks and then adding an appliqué flower hummingbird over the whole quilt using hombre lavender fabric. It was for my sister for Christmas.

The one I started but never finished (due to child I was making it for changing her mind on what she wanted) was rather large (9"-10") pale purple blocks with raw edge appliqué dark purple silhouette Tinker Bell figures enlarged from the Tinker Bell fabric planned for the back. The wings were scrappy pink and purple prints needle turn appliqué. Still have a copy of the silhouette in case I ever decide to do it for another little girl.

I enlarged Calm Reflections deer pattern for my nephew.

Doghousemom I just love it! Everything about that chemo quilt is great! I see you varied the length of your strips, did you just cut some in half before sewing them together? Wish I could see the quilting. So the appliqué was done as a raw edge method?
And now looking back at these I just love all the silhouettes! Just fantastic ladies! Now I need to look for a skateboarder image to do this on my brother's quilt I'm just starting. And I want to find cats for my granddaughter. Oh the possibilities! These are so awesome! I just love you guys! |

This is a recent top I did. Not finished yet. Found three of them online and one in my EQ5.

I think that maybe you could get a clip art deer head to enlarge.

I really like these quilts with silhouette appliques. I must do something like this soon. Thanks for showing.

I made this one for a friend. Never could get a good picture -- colors much less dark than it shows. But it is made up of 1" finished blocks in the middle. I drew the asian bamboo and used fused applique for the black motif.

I did a nativity silhouette, and used a fusible web. Then I used my free-motion (and straight stitch) to sew the edges down.

I just wanted to say "WOW" on all who posted their tops on here!

I am about to quilt a Turning Twenty (68x80) for my husband. I wonder if I could use a stencil of the U.S. Coast Guard emblem to make a silhouette? Interesting idea.
Concerned as to whether I could put in enough detail for it to be discernible. I know I can do his C130 and helicopter but not sure about the seal. Any ideas or experience with something like that? |

I did some practice log cabin blocks, using some strips I had available. Despite having blue flowers in it, the tan colored strip did not work at all, but after all the time and fabric involved, I did not want to waste the blocks, so added more tan and some 'camouflage'. It's just a top so far.

This isn't a silhouette but flowers cut out of border fabric and raw edge appliqued on this pieced quilt.

I did something similar but I did the applique on separate fabric and used it as a medallion sort of. I found photos then enlarged them, cut them out of freezer paper then ironed it to my black fabric for the pattern.

I've used coloring books for silhouettes and they turned out okay.

I made a large patriotic quilt and put a block in the middle of a silhouette of George Washington's head in navy blue. Free clip art on the web. You can copy and paste into Paint or PowerPoint and resize.
Great topic! Gramajo you made an amazing quilt. |
For my parent's 50th, I asked them to draw silhouettes on paper and send them to me. I used them (facing each other) in the center of a small wall hanging. They were appliqued in black on top of gold lamee with a purple background and Jenny Beyer soft edge piecing in the corner block. The quilt was octagonal in shape. Sorry, no photo available.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. I am definitely making it now. Do you think the background should be a simple design, 9 patch, strips, etc?
