Ever Seen a Pattern Like This?
 

A friend just bought a new house and this is a picture of some fabric she had and she asked me to use a pattern similar to it when I offered to do placemats or a table runner as a housewarming gift.

Has anyone ever seen a pattern like this? It doesn't have to be exact, but just similar.

I found one on Moda called Cross Terrain that I may be able to adapt, but if I could find something closer, that would be great. Cross Terrain Pattern

That's got a strong 1970s aesthetic to me, used to see things made with large applique in the sewing magazines of the time. I would think a simple rounded rectangle of the single image for each place-mat. The base color with a fused on frame of the blue (just zigzag, period would probably be that horrible nylon thread we had back then... I'd match the blue). Same with the overlay of the frame pieces. I think it would be cool to have place-mats with just the one side frame, you could put them all the same way or rotate them like the design there.

You are clever and can probably do some super cool stuff adding interest with your quilting. I'd probably wimp out and do some sort of all-over diagonal grid with a slight serpentine stitch -- but that inner frame part just has so many opportunities, along with the soft swirls.

For a runner, you could reduce the idea down to maybe a 6" block, 10" would be good. Part of that 70s thing was making blocks huge to be modern as opposed to tiny little fussy 30s triangles.

This is a pattern I would think would be easy to have someone with EQ8 or similar, to create the block for you. It looks to have a simple design. I would ask some one here to try.

Alas, she knows not what she asks. Curves and curves and curves. You are a good friend to attempt this one. If it were me, I would go with raw edge applique and fusible.

70ish to me also. My mom had a pair of drapes with a similar pattern. I agree with fusing. No way I would sew all those curves and try to get them to lay flat. Ugh!!!

Reminds me of one of Jennie’s patterns from Sew Kind of Wonderful. I made the table runner and it wasn’t difficult. Sorry can’t find the pattern name for you right now but it uses the quick curve ruler.

I would look at snowballing rectangles to get the same effect, and draw it up on paper to the size you'd like, something like this eg. It's a bit like the pineapple block

I also looked at the Sew Kind Of Wonderful rulers and there might be an option there to do something similar, but not exact.

I've been studying this and although I've been trying to stick to piecing it, I'm leaning towards applique with a close blanket stitch edge. Going to work up the patterns this afternoon, once my Mystery Quilt blocks are done.
