Question, is everyone able to sew a 1/4 inch seam, or do you do perhaps 1/2 inch?

beachlady 08-14-2010 02:48 PM

Have 1/4 inch foot - works great. Before I got it, I had masking tape to guide me.

katsewnsew 08-14-2010 02:53 PM

I too have a 1/4 inch foot and sew at a scant 1/4 inch. Works well for me.

mrspete 08-14-2010 03:05 PM

I wiggle my way through

katmom54 08-14-2010 03:05 PM

I try!

seamstome 08-14-2010 03:08 PM

I also use a 1/4 inch foot. One of the best things ever invented IMHO!

littlehud 08-14-2010 03:18 PM

1/4th is my goal. I'm definitely not perfect though.

sewmuchmore 08-14-2010 03:30 PM

1/4 is my Aim for.

lindyline 08-14-2010 03:32 PM

I used to think I was doing a 1/4"seam, right up until I bought a gadget to measure my seams, from westalee rulers(also bought their guide).Boy was my seam out. Haven't had an issue since I started using this.

I have found 1/2 or 1/4 is fine BUT most if not all patterns are based on 1/4 so when you do 1/2 it turns out smaller. Most important is being consistent. If you start out using 1/2 make sure you do the same thing thru out that quilt. Cindy

Love my 1/4 inch guide on my machine. If hand piecing I have a 1/4 inch ruler that I use and draw the lines with pencil. I don't trust my eyes.

When I found the 1/4" foot with guide it changed my piecing. I ordered one for every machine I have. The 1/4" foot without guide is no use to me at all.

I like my foot with the guide, too.

wvdek 08-14-2010 04:33 PM

I use a 1/4" foot and on occasion a scant 1/4" .

dellareya 08-14-2010 05:35 PM

I use the 1/4" foot all the time. The other day I was sewing a garment for a friend and realized I was still using the 1/4" foot. Had to rip it out--standard is 5/8" seam for garments.

retired2pa 08-14-2010 05:38 PM

I use my 1/4" foot AND my guide attachment that I got with my new machine. I love it and I've never had better seams...not perfect but much more accurate then they use to be.

MzMcKee 08-14-2010 05:40 PM

I use my 1/4" foot and a 1/4" guide I made using masking tape. It's perfect for me.

LAQUITA 08-14-2010 05:43 PM

my pressure foot is right at ther 1/4 inch mark!

zennia 08-14-2010 05:44 PM

I try but it does'nt always come out 1/4". I guess practice is the answer for me.

Charleen DiSante 08-14-2010 05:44 PM

Aargh! The other day I was supposed to be dong 1/4" and had forgotten to change something on my machine. The finished block was to be 12 1/2" and it was only 12". I had to add a border. How irritating! But In the past I had used a 1/4 " foot and/or a thick stack of painters tape or masking tape.

paintmejudy 08-14-2010 05:57 PM

My 1/4" foot with the built-in guide is worth its weight in gold.

1/4" or close to it. 1/2" is too wide. As a matter of fact when I sew clothes, going to a larger seam is difficult.

kim_s 08-14-2010 06:55 PM

I can't use the foot with the black edge guide for some reason. It's not as accurate as using a regular foot and eyeballing where the 1/4 inch mark is (if that makes sense). But I know accuracy makes all the difference so it's worth it to get a nice clean 1/4 inch.

magnolia 08-14-2010 09:48 PM

I also use a 1/4" foot. I also just learned yesterday that I can adjust the needle on my sewing machine to get a scant 1/4".

lalaland 08-14-2010 10:14 PM

I have a 6 position needle on my machine so I can get an accurate 1/4" seam by moving my needle.

omasherri 08-14-2010 10:24 PM

I have to really work at getting that 1/4 inch and I do a scant but 1/2 inch is to big

sharon b 08-14-2010 10:45 PM

I try  LOL

EasyPeezy 08-15-2010 12:05 AM

I try for that 1/4 inch too. ;) Unless you're making a quilt with just
big squares then you can get by with 1/2 inch but anything with angles
or small cut pieces might get you in trouble in the long run. Better
aim for the 1/4 inch. Besides, you would use less fabric ($$$) and
there would be less bulk for quilting. Just my humble opinion. :D

Crlyn 08-15-2010 02:09 AM

I use a 1/4 inch foot as well.

steelecg 08-15-2010 01:16 PM

I have a 1/4" foot but sometimes it isn't true - I use a special ruler that goes under thepresser foot - it has a hole for the needle to go in that is exactly a quarter inch - one this is established, I put a stick on quide remove the ruler and I am set to go

EasyPeezy 08-15-2010 02:33 PM

I just remembered something...someone please correct me if I'm wrong
but I think I read that if you are sewing flannel you need 1/2 inch seam
allowance. Is that correct?

steelecg 08-15-2010 03:35 PM

I think that is what is recommended - good luck

Pickles 08-15-2010 04:05 PM

I also use the 1/4 " foot, it is a live saver :D

Stitchnripper 08-15-2010 04:12 PM

I always try for the 1/4 inch. I think my machines are fine, it's the operator that has the difficulty! I made a flannel baby quilt with 3" squares and used 1/4 inch seams. The quilt is 7 years old, washed a zillion times and is still holding together.

BRenea 08-15-2010 04:15 PM

I have a 1/4" foot with a built-in guide...works great for me!

CarrieAnne 08-15-2010 04:23 PM

I try!
