Extra Lighting for Machine
Any suggestions for extra lighting on a sewing machine? I have a clamp-on florescent light, but I am looking for something I can aim at my sewing needle and light up the area under the throat plate a little better. Pictures or websites would be great.

here is a recent thread that may have some ideas for you https://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f...g-t308155.html

I just went on Amazon and found the tiny string of LED lighting with on/off switch that had the reviews/price I wanted. This is the one I bought and I'm just thrilled with it...of course, the supplier can change, so the lighting might not be as good now. The LED strip has adhesive backing to affix to your sewing machine.

Also, when buying replacement bulbs for your machine, if possible, get the frosted bulbs even if they're a lot more expensive. They diffuse the lighting, making it less shadowy.

I have the Machine LED kit (Dimmable) - great light and not expensive! I saw one on a machine in a quilt shop about 5 years ago and was sold!
http://thestripstick.com/buy_products I’ve actually had a couple Bendable Bright Lights in the past, but the arm part always ends up loose and not very positionable in a very short time. |
I purchased an Ott sewing machine light that I like with a 60% off coupon at Joann's. I like that I can move it between machines or use it as a stand-alone. It attaches with 3M command strips and can use a USB or batteries for power. I also pulled it out during a recent power outage. :-)

I put a double strip of LED lights on mine and it really helps. I just cut it to the length required.

I have the LED strip that you stick onto the roof of the harp of your machine. It's been stuck there for about 3 years and it has never come unstuck and still works great.

My last trip to Costco I bought a lamp that is quite flexible. https://www.costco.ca/ottlite-led-de...100504760.html
I also have this lamp, https://www.costco.ca/ottlite-space-...100495303.html This one has a magnifier I have another 2 OTT lamps I have bought over the years. One has a battery, but the battery no longer holds a charge. But it works will plugged into an outlet. |
I just bought a desk lamp to set on left side of machine to see to oil race and replace bobbin. Helps a lot.
I have a pole lamp with 5 bulbs on the right side. I can aim them where I need them. |
I love the LED strips! They are so easy to put on the machine and work great. I got mine on Amazon and put them on my Juki. A world of difference!

What machine do you have? I have the Janome 6600MC and I did replace the front bulb with an LED bulb - which made a huge difference. I also have a desk style Ott lite that sits on a shelf above the machine which also helps. I have the light that sticks to the machine - but it seemed to get in my way so it sits in a box right now trying to decide if I want it on my 15-91. My FW also has an LED bulb and I love it. I bought a small portable LED light - it runs on batteries or plugs into a USB port.

Quilting Candy... i have the 6600 too - where did you get the bulb?

Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. I am trying to find extra lighting for my mom’s Singer sewing machine. She is 81 and needs extra lighting. I like the LED strips that was suggested, so I am going to start with them, and maybe some for me. I also saw some LED lights with a gooseneck that either mounts on the machine or has a magnet. I am not sure what the magnet would adhere to, but I am going to research it some more.
I didn’t know that about the frosted bulbs. I will have to check and see what she has as well as mine. |
I ordered mine from Walmart.com - it's the 12v LED # 4117810. It was $13.00. I wasn't able to find it right now. Someone on the Janome Yahoo group said you can get one that fits in a car and they are cheaper - but I was concerned when a sewing machine repairman didn't recommend those.

I have the LED strip for mine. Love them, although I ordered from a different place.

Look on amazon for Cutex LED lights for sewing machines. Instead of a long strip, the light is a 1 1/2" square and works great. I bought 2 - one for my Sweet 16 and the other for my older Bernina travel machine.

I'm with QuiltingVagabond. I put LED lights in all of my sewing machines. They are the right amount of light.

I purchased an Alien Light at Meijers. I like it because it doesn't take up a lot of space on my sewing table and I can easily move it around, bend the "necks" etc. to put the light exactly where I need it. Since it is an LED, it gives off an amazing amount of light. Here's the link for it:
