Do most of you go to the local fabic shop to get you suppies or do you order online? I'm new at quilting and so far I've been going to local stores and walmart. I've never ordered online.
Thanks for the advice.

amma 02-05-2011 07:15 AM

LQS, Walmart, Joann's, Thriftstores, other fabric shops as well as online :D:D:D

Check out the Main and Links section for sales and coupon codes for the online shops :D:D:D

dakotamaid 02-05-2011 07:16 AM

I shop everywhere, online, LQS, garage sales, craigslist, ebay, you name it. Wherever I can find the best price for what I want and need.

carolaug 02-05-2011 07:16 AM

I love to go to the store for fabric...its nice to get out of the house...I have more than 4 quilt shops near by and several fabric stores an 3 Joann's within 1/2 hour. I do not buy fabric or shop at Walmart but have it near by. 3 within 1/2 hour...I have not been to the house of Martins but heard its good...that is 1/2hour away. Keepsake quilting is an hour been there.

Vicki W 02-05-2011 07:17 AM

Anywhere that good cotton is available. :)

Midwestmary 02-05-2011 07:18 AM

Locally as well as on-line. Links section here is a great source for on-line bargins.

That is great. I only have 2 shops within 30 miles. If I go to Lincoln I have more but that is an hour and half.

bj 02-05-2011 07:19 AM

I shop mostly at local shops, but I do order online, too. I find I like to be able to touch the fabric and actually see the true colors. :D

Annaquilts 02-05-2011 07:19 AM

I am more and more ordering online and also buying, because of economy, off this list or ebay previously owned fabric. All together buying way less over the last 3-4 years.

bamamama 02-05-2011 07:20 AM

I've never shopped online for fabric. You'd have to pay shippig on top of the price of the fabric, but if its out of state I suppose you save the sales tax.

carolaug 02-05-2011 07:24 AM

I only buy stuff on line when there is free shipping. I haven't bought fabric but I buy lots of other stuff from Amazon and Joanns. If your state does not have sales tax, you do not pay sales tax no matter where you buy it from.

cbridges22 02-05-2011 07:24 AM

I shop mostly on line and find great deals and cheaper fabric prices even with shipping. Can't beat the convenience.

Sapphire_Rae 02-05-2011 07:36 AM

I try to go to LQS, like to support the local businesses, but it is a small store so I do buy most of my fabric online.

EIQuilter 02-05-2011 07:53 AM

I try to support my local shops whenever possible, but I do shop online as well when there are good sales or free shipping. Try to get the best quality fabric you can - I'm now finding that quilts I made years ago (before cotton fabrics were as prevalent as they are now)are starting to disintegrate. Primarily it's where I've used muslin instead of a sturdier cotton.

buckyfan19 02-05-2011 08:51 AM

I usually find my "oh my" pieces online, then fill in with stuff from Walmart or Joanns. Every now and then I get out of town and hit Hancocks, but mostly its local stuff. The Joann's in my town just closed down and I got TONS of stuff that I probably wouldn't have bought, but it was on closeout.
Have fun shopping!

Tinabodina 02-05-2011 08:55 AM

I go to Hancock and JoAnns and my LQS, but I do buy a lot of fabric and items on line and through Ebay

EagarBeez 02-05-2011 09:56 AM

I shop on line mostly, since I am in a very small rural town and don't have a good sized fabric shop nearby. Closest would be about 4 hr drive 1 way.
Either that or wait 1 a year when we visit our kids in Kansas and shop there

hobbykat1955 02-05-2011 10:02 AM

Joann's and ebay...LQS double prices on everything especially the rulers and notions.

BellaBoo 02-05-2011 10:45 AM

I shop anywhere there is fabric to be bought or looked at. Walmart, thrift stores, shirt clearances at men's shops and yard sales. I love Connecting Threads online shop, you can request a free catalog on their website and get free ones from Keepsakes Quilting and Hancock's of Paducah. Get them! They are inspiring, full of quilt pictures and projects. (I never pay shipping from Connecting Threads!) Do a shop hop: one is online right now: Fabshophop.com and you will have all the quilt shops online right at your fingertips. Sign up for the newsletters and you'll know about a fabric sale in advanced.

And if you live "in the middle of nowhere", remember that the cost of shipping may offset the gasoline that you're not burning.

Pitty Pat 02-05-2011 11:14 AM

I love the magazines, Keepsake Quilting, Connecting Threads, Nancy's Notions (just to name a few of my favs). They all have quilting supplies and have discounts too. Also, equilter (online) will sometimes ship for free and so will some of the magazines. One other tidbit, look in the back of your quilt magazines and sometimes they will have catalogs that you can sign up for or request for quilting supplies. There are lots of things out there. One more...sign up for coupons for Joanns, they will soften the wallet for discounts. Hancock (online) is another wonderful online store...i could go on and on...i think this should hold you for a while. Have fun shopping.

Tamara 02-05-2011 12:21 PM

Thanks, I only have 1 fabic shop thats 25 mins from me everything else but walmart is a hour to hour an a half away. Very small country area.

Oh my gosh...Are you in Heaven It sounds like it lol I have to drive an hour to get to one closest and 1 1/2 hours to another.

carolaug 02-06-2011 04:44 AM

I am afraid to start shopping for fabric on line....I would end up buying everything...I have a hard enough time now to not buy too much...de-stashing today my closet is getting to cluttered. I have a friend that is making blankets to donate. Great reason/excuse for me to get rid of some fabric that I know I will not use and is just plain ugly...what was I thinking...

Jeri M 02-06-2011 05:16 AM

I try to go to LQS. We have already had one close and then another just last month. I really try to support them. There is nothing like running into a store and seeing thousands of quality fabric and smiling faces that help you with any of your needs.

Moon Holiday 02-06-2011 05:54 AM

I shop online and in LQS (which in my case aren't so local). If I am looking for a specific fabric I go online because it is easier than driving for an hour one way only to discover the QS doesn't have the fabric. If we're driving to a particular area, I always make sure I know where the nearest QS is so I can check them out and of course buy some fabric etc.

#1piecemaker 02-06-2011 06:06 AM

You can also find a lot of nice fabric on here. I know I have. And I've offered stuff from my stash as well. Scroll down and check them out or just go to the home page and click on the Classified section. It's better than the home shopping network.

tryitall 02-06-2011 06:56 AM

I do alot of shopping online. I have never had any problems. We live so far from anything but WM, which carries no notions or fabric!

carolaug 02-06-2011 07:00 AM

I agree...and the more that go out of business the higher the prices will go in others. I am buying more and more fabric from the LQS but rulers, threads, Batting and other notions form Joannes

PaperPrincess 02-06-2011 07:00 AM

I shop everwhere there's fabric to be had, but try and get all my notions at JoAnn's. Love those 40% coupons.

pieces 02-06-2011 07:48 AM

I purchase all my fabric from my LQS. I have never ordered fabric online. I want to see and feel the quality of the fabric before I buy it. I also purchase my thread there as well because it is important to use good thread. Rotary blades, rulers, etc. is cheaper to purchase at JoAnns and use a coupon.

klgreene 02-06-2011 09:07 AM

I do most of my shopping on line, only because I'm in a wheelchair, and it's difficult for me to get out. I have been to my local LQS, and would love to spend more time there, Hobby Lobby and Walmart. I like seeing and feeling the fabric. Although most of what I have ordered was perfect, but I did get a few things that were not the right color, or were totally different than what the pictures looked like.

Thats good to know, about the color not always looking the same. Thanks

BettyGee 02-06-2011 11:54 AM

I'm an online addict. Have found some of the most gorgeous fabrics and prices I could never match in the brick and mortar stores.

Tamara 02-06-2011 11:55 AM

Thanks, have you always got what you order ? Like the exact color.

I've never had an issue, and I often order online. I have 1 LQS that's nasty so I don't go there, and the other one is 45-50 minutes away from me, so it's rare I go.

sewingsuz 02-06-2011 12:35 PM

I have to order online, there are no stores for 120 miles round trip. Wallmart took out the fabric department. this is not typo, I live in Rottonwood.

Grandma Peg 02-06-2011 02:06 PM

Welcome from WI.

p38flygirl 02-06-2011 03:54 PM

I do both..But I always look for sales to help build my stash..There are always some good sales here on the board...
