Fabric baskets - making fabric ties.
I've been sewing for 41 yrs. and am thinking of making my own fabric ties for the fabric baskets instead of using ribbon, mainly because I don't want to buy all kinds of different colors of ribbon. Wonder if any of you have any helpful hints in sewing narrow pieces. I'll probably sew mine 1/2 to 1" wide finished. May even have a rounded end to them and the bags also. Thx for any suggestions. ;)

Ribbon is quite inexpensive if your $ store carries it. You can also use fancy shoe laces from the $ store. If you want to use fabric strips, it might be a spot to use up selvage edges. One side is finished so you could fold in the raw edge and top stitch the selvage over it. I would do just about anything to avoid having to turn sewn fabric tubes right side out myself.

The bias tape makers work well (you don't have to cut on the bias). If you use this 2" one, you can then just fold it in half and sew close to the edge. Don't know about finishing the ends.

Laughing at myself here. I just realized that I am speaking of a Candy Sack tutorial not the fabric boxes. Erase! If anyone is interested, here is the link for the sacks. ENJOY http://thisandthatpatterns.com/downl...ck_Pattern.pdf

Walmart carries a lot of inexpensive ribbon this time of the year. You might also check out a few garage and estate sales, Goodwill and thrift stores.

If you want to make your own start out with a strip of fabric 4 times the finished width you want. Fold srrip in 1/2 lengthwise & press. Open the strip out & fold each side to the folded center line & press. Fold & press again along your original center line then top stitch close to the edges. This will give you a nice finished edge. You could also sew a tube & turn with a safety pin then press. Just make sure your tube is wide enough to fit the pin through.
