fabric cut wrong direction

I made a quilt for my husband with a golf theme. It had squares that I fussycut pictures of golfers. Here is my problem, one of the fabrics had an up and down direction that I didn't notice. After getting the top all sewn I realized my problem. Has this just happened to me or has this happened to any of you out in QB world. I decided to not correct the problem, a quilter friend tried to talk me into fixing the problem that would take labor intense work. Any ideas from you quilters out there? the quilt is at the machine quilter as I type. By the way my husband saw the problem right away! Imagine that! I thought he wouldn't notice this oversight. I mentioned I could fix it but it would take me away from spending quality time with him, he said ignore it!

You did exactly what I would have done. Time to quit worrying about it.

Probably ignore it. If the quilt could be looked at from several different directions, it probably doesn't matter that all the blocks are in the same direction (if I understood what you were saying).

Tropical 09-17-2013 07:21 PM

I say ignore it because if your DH says it's fine, it's fine. You made it for him and he likes it. So no worries. :):):)

Mizgoodie 09-17-2013 07:25 PM

We have almost all done the very same thing. If your husband likes it, leave it alone. It's for him anyway. Enjoy your time with him. :)

BETTY62 09-17-2013 07:26 PM

Your hubby knows his quilt was made with love and that's all that matters.

MaryMo 09-17-2013 07:29 PM

You intended to do that .... right? It's a conversation starter now. Besides, who's perfect in this world? I would enjoy it the way it is.

newbee3 09-17-2013 07:35 PM

It happened to me just the other day I was so pround I got my pieces cut then to find out half of them were in the wrong direction.

I totally agree! Go spend time with him and quit worrying :)

amelia0607 09-17-2013 07:48 PM

I think it's just wonderful that he would rather have quality time with you than to have you correct this.

DOTTYMO 09-17-2013 09:18 PM

But each one is correct in the direction it is sewn in. No problem as you look at a quilt from all directions.

Nammie to 7 09-18-2013 01:46 AM

No matter how hard I try to get it all right when I look at the finished product there is usually at least one thing that jumps out at me that could have been done better. It's all a learning experience.

quilts4charity 09-18-2013 02:27 AM

Been there, done that, I figure it doesn't matter that much...you bundle up in it and no one notices...

DonnaPBradshaw 09-18-2013 03:01 AM

Thank you everyone for responding! All your responses have been gratifying. When I get it back from the quilter I will post a picture if I can learn how, I'm pretty new to QB. I love reading everyone's questions and the answer's are very informational also.

Holice 09-18-2013 03:20 AM

It is always difficult to understand the problem without seeing a picture. If the quilt is already at the quilter a decision has already been made.

Lori S 09-18-2013 03:54 AM

I have done what you describe. I now try to avoid fabric that is directional....because no matter how hard I try some will get sewn the wrong way. Its great your husband chose time with you, the "error" will always be a reminder of how much he treasures you .

toverly 09-18-2013 05:08 AM

I've done it! Thankfully, I make throws (4 x 6) so they are always in all directions on the couch, floor, back of the couch. So it is not noticed unless it is "examined".

tessagin 09-18-2013 05:15 AM

Oversights are never as important as time spent with a loved one!

jerinbd445 09-18-2013 05:26 AM

Most likely overlook the item. If your cover can be regarded coming from distinctive directions, the item likely will not matter that all the particular hinders are usually in exactly the same course (if I recognized what we have been saying).

Inez Ruth 09-18-2013 05:37 AM

Here's what I'd say, "Oh, I did that on purpose to see if you were paying attention."

AudreyB 09-18-2013 06:00 AM

I agree with everyone about leaving it. That being said, I thought I'd share one of my experiences. After my quilt came back from the quilter's I found one block upside down. It really bothered me, so I made another block and appliqued it on top. Then I re-quilted the block. It ended up looking good.

nativetexan 09-18-2013 06:27 AM

if it was a lap quilt it should have been ignored. they get put on upside down a lot. and Yes i'm sure we've all done that one time or another. I did a king size of different blocks and one was a T block. one T was wrong and my hubby pointed that out quickly. I did fix it though. had to on that one.

Boston1954 09-18-2013 07:18 AM

I just started a Braid quilt and one fabric with cats on it is facing the opposite direction from what I wanted. I decided to leave it. Once it is done, the quilt will be turned in every direction when it's used. I used to stress over stuff like this, but as you said, it would be labor intensive to change it.

PaperPrincess 09-18-2013 08:08 AM

The only time that I worry about direction is if the quilt will always be used in the same configuration, for instance a wall hanging or a bed quilt. If it's a throw, I plan to have directional prints go in all directions, that way any way you pick it up & use it, at least some of the print is correct!

citruscountyquilter 09-19-2013 03:20 AM

If it were a wall hanging it might make a difference because that if viewed in one direction but with a quilt that you throw and snuggle up with who cares about the direction. I just grab and snuggle and the top becomes whatever edge is closest to my chin. With your quilt no matter which way you grab it some are always in the right direction.

sewbizgirl 09-19-2013 04:06 AM

Just tell him that's your "keeping me humble" block! A good reminder, every time you look at it.

triplerosa 09-19-2013 04:11 AM

i've also cut directional fabric the wrong way, i was heartbroken but learned a expensive lesson.

Jeannette51 09-19-2013 05:03 AM

Atleast you noticed it before quilting it, no me. Just the opposite, wait until it is quilted and the binding one, then see my blunder. As mentioned before, it is a good conversation starter, LOL. However I find most people don't notice unless I point it out.

lclang 09-19-2013 05:06 AM

If all the blocks are cut the same direction, even if it's wrong, I would ignore it! Why stress over something that doesn't matter??

Shorebird 09-19-2013 05:08 AM

Only GOD can make something perfect! Every quilt should have at least one mistake (noticeable or not).......just relax and enjoy......if anyone comments, tell them it was done intentionally.....

jeaninmaine 09-19-2013 05:49 AM

If it bugs you, applique something over it. A lot faster than replacing it.

fangman 09-19-2013 10:04 AM

I do that on purpose, and turn them sideways, and upside down and right side up, especially for children. That way there is always some blocks right side up no matter how you have it over you.

Pennyhal 09-19-2013 10:20 AM

Oh, I've done that too! I agree that you should ignore it. Quilts don't need to be perfect to be loved.

Should be your decision. If it bothers you enough, vix it. If not, don't. You could always tell your hubby that square was for looking at while he's getting into bed.

RAChhap 09-19-2013 12:23 PM

Just declare a one block penalty on yourself and continue on!

I agree. It would only bother me if it were for a wall hanging or something else which would only be viewed one way. I always plan my blocks/images going in all directions on bed quilts. I prefer that it can be put on the bed with either end at the headboard, and that it has images facing all directions.

tropit 09-19-2013 01:20 PM

Definitely keep it the way it is. Your hubby loves it, so that's enough. But also, quilters in, "them good old days," used to purposely put a block in their quilts that wasn't right, upside down, etc. It was supposed to signify that the maker of the quilt was less than perfect. (As mentioned above, only God is perfect.)

just tell him when his head is down .arms straight ..knees bent ..eye on the ball ....the rest of the quilt is upside down that block will be right side up
