What brand names are out there for fabric glue?

BeckyL 09-30-2011 12:43 AM

Roxanne's Basting Glue

piepatch 09-30-2011 12:46 AM

There once was a fabric glue called FabTac. I think it is still around.

snipforfun 09-30-2011 03:41 AM

Fabric Tac is what I use if I want a permanent bond. I get it with a. coupon at Joanns.

Are there permanent glues and washout glues?

blueangel 09-30-2011 05:08 AM

I use Elmers school glue.

Liquid Stitch, permanent. I buy mine at WM but its available in a lot of places. Not permanent-elmer's acid free school glue sticks.

Kitsie 09-30-2011 08:26 AM

I like Alene's "OK to Wash It" for permanent.

Jeanniejo 09-30-2011 08:27 AM

I use mostly glue sticks.

Peckish 09-30-2011 08:30 AM

Depends on what you want to use it for. If I'm appliqueing and want the glue to be a temporary bond, I use Elmer's washable. I'd use something that is labeled as a "permanent fabric bond" if I ever wanted it to be permanent.

TanyaL 09-30-2011 04:35 PM

Joan's and Hancock's and Walmsrt all have selections of glue suitable for fabric in both temporary (washable) and permanent types. They come in liquid or spray types. Most of the glue sticks are washable. You find them in the sewing notions area, the quilting notions area and in the crafts notions area. The stores don't put them altogether in any one place. Hobby Lobby doesn't carry as much selection. I find that I need a liquid permanent glue and a temporary spray glue the most. I also use a lot of the adhesive seam tapes.

DogHouseMom 09-30-2011 04:53 PM

You looking for liquid or glue stick? I use a stick, I don't have to let it dry - just wipe, place fabric, sew!

I've used a few different sticks, have not had a problem with any. Just make sure it say's "acid free". I've even used the ones that say "permanent" without a problem as I don't think the permanence applies to soap and water.

that said .. I have tested ALL of my sticks prior to use on scraps. I apply the stick heavily on both sides, let it dry, I'll even try a second test and iron it - then I wash them to make sure the glue washes out. So far ... not a single "permanent" glue stick stood up to soap and water (most of the time only water was needed).

I like Aleenes OK to wash it for permanent!
and washable elmers for not permanent.
UHU makes a nice glue stick as well!

Agreed ... Uhu is one of the sticks I've tried. As well as Office Max' own brand (which is probably one of the others!)

It is still around, however you do not want to use it in a quilt. It will not wash out, it is there to stay. I use it for crafts.

I like Liquid Stitch. Its really good for those of us who wear underwire bras. When the wire starting poking out, just push it back in and seal the opening with liquid stitch. Works great.

Yes, I use this because it is what Sharon Shamber's (the award winning quilter) uses. I figured if she uses it on her quilts I can certainly use it on mine...he, he, he...

WOW! You did all the work for us! Thanks! Interesting that the "washable" glues can be either "washes out when laundering" OR "will withstand laundering." Never could figure that out...

There are places and times in quilt making that permanent glues are useful. There is no one-size-fits-all rule. Those that make serger quilts, for instance, frequently use a permanent glue drop to stop the tailings on a seam. Some use an adhesive permanent spray on an applique because the temporary ones do not last as long as they need them to last. Some temps just seem to evaporate away after a couple of days or so. Permanent sprays are not inflexible. Many permanent glues are used in placemats and tablerunners.

Elmers for me!!!

lizzyq 10-01-2011 07:10 AM

I like Unique Stitch from Collins for permanent bonding. It stays even when washed over and over. It bonds quickly and does not show through. A friend who used it for hems on her clothing told me about it a few years ago.

Thanks for that idea!!! I had been just pulling the underwire out and just being lopsided for a little while...I will absolutely have to get this!!!

Don't waste your money on Roxann's glue. The tips are great that come with the bottle of glue, but don't pay for the refill glue.It is Elmer's. Just get Elmers on sale during back to school time.
Sharon Schamber uses Elmer's....it works great in piecing, doing curves and circles etc.

Doreen 10-01-2011 09:18 AM

I use the school glue. It is just temporary and it washes out

I like this one too, and it has a really fine tip in the pen style container so it's perfect for glued applique!

Sharon uses Liquid Stitch for permanent applique glue. Wi

Sorry, double post.

Bluelady 10-01-2011 09:23 AM

I often use Elmers school glue stick. It seems to wash out just fine

wraez 10-01-2011 09:24 AM

Real Deal Tacky Glue, and I also use Aileen's Jewel-it (also works on fabrics).

Oh I just have an experiment in mind to use glue and fabric trash so to speak. I just ordered Aileene's glue, gallon of it. Saved me about $80 buying a gallon over 4 oz or 8 oz bottles.

It's one of those ideas that I see in my mind but can't explain it so best thing is just do it and see what it looks like and if it comes out the way I think it will I'll post it here under photos.

You are right - it won't wash out. I only use it for embellishments, i.e. yo yo's, etc.

romanojg 10-02-2011 06:35 AM

There are alot but not all of them are good for quilting. Roxanne's will get hard so you need to wet it soon after to dissolve it. I use Elmer's school glue stick for appliqueing and it works out great.

I have those "wonder if" moments, too, and just try an idea in my head - if it doesn't work, it goes in the trash and never thought of again - but if it works - - - - hooray!!

Yes, but I use the Elmer's Washable School Glue. Works great and does not gum up my needle.

Plus it washes out; some of the others get hard. Why put alot of work into something and then have something like glue mess it up. Plus; it's cheap
