There's this great fabric store about a mile from the entrance to Little Creek, called The Fabric Hut about 7000 bolts of fabric. One of our favorite stores in the country.

We are headed to the area, Norfolk, to get our house there ready to put on the market. I told my lovely Lady that there are two places I want to go, one is Fabric Hut and A Different Touch in Chesapeake. They are the dealer we bought our Bernina's from and just wonderful people. I lived in the area for about 8 years and honestly, being a Texas boy, most folks in the area are just downright surly from my point of view. East Coast people are different, glad I'm back in Texas.

I tend to go in difference directions depending on my mood of the day. I use to buy anything I really liked, might put a couple matching pieces with it as well. Then I went through a phase where I would see a picture of a quilt I liked, buy everything for that project. My thoughts were, someday I'll be retired and won't be able to buy everything I want so I'll have plenty of projects to choice from. I've grouped fabrics together in bags along with the pattern or magazine and last count I was up to 12 projects. So, the time has come. I'm officially retiring come the end of June, so my plan now is to tackle those projects as I feel like it. Now I buy only what I need to go with what I'm doing. Off to a shop at lunchtime to get more of a brown for binding on a baby quilt that's almost done. This quilt was not from my planned projects, everything except for the binding is from my scrap bucket.

This is what I do ... most of the time. I choose the fabrics and THEN I choose the quilt pattern to suit the fabrics. This is primarily because of 2 reasons: (1) both the time available and my mood to shop have to be just right, and (2) I buy, almost exclusively, quality fabric at sale prices. In this way, I have no alternative but to build a fabric stash.
While shopping, if both the fabric and the price are right, I cannot afford to pass it up. I then keep some snippets of my fabric stash in an envelope in my purse so, on the occasions that I do get some time to browse and shop for fabric, I have the samples with me to find matching fabric. On the rare occasion that I choose a pattern first and then go shopping for the specific fabrics for that pattern, it's usually difficult to find what I want with all the requirements: color, quality, and price (and I refuse to buy poor quality fabric ever again ... been there, done that!) I quite enjoy my method of buying fabulous fabric on sale and then choosing what to use it for; in the long run, I believe it saves me money. |
My Mother-in-law did that....only bought fabric for the quilt planned. She nearly fainted when she saw my sewing room a couple of years ago and my stash has multiplied since then.
Quite honestly, I'm a fabricoholic...it is ALL about the fabric. Quilts are just an afterthought. (hmmm, did I really say that?) I have a huge collection of patterns for quilts that I couldn't complete in 2 lifetimes. warm quilt hugs, sue |

I have been organizing my stash and I have found fabric I forgot I bought for a certain project, but of course have not started or on some not finished. I go to the stores with a project in mind and I buy the fabric for that project, but I always end up seeing more new fabrics I like.

Oh, those poor souls with no fabric on hand to be inspired by! My theory is that if the pattern calls for half a yard then one yard is better and two yards must be even better yet! Yes, I love fabric...good fabric especially... so I try to keep as much on hand as possible.

my name is JoAnn{like the store] and I have quite a bit of fabric in my stash! I use to buy because I had to have it! now I look and say why did I buy that, but been buying for years. My quilting friends call it JoAnn's bargain basement. you always need a color that is a perfect fit for your quilt, just have to go to the store to get but , now I only get what I need . A quilt shop visit always make you feel good. I try to support the local quilt shops they have fabic you won't find in JoAnn's

I don't need to have fabric to inspire me, I get inspiration from going to online quilt shop. I can look and look, and save me money until I find the right fabric.

Oh my goodness...I have never ever been able to do that!
I go in a fabric store, with certain colors, or items on the brain, and see other stuff, that would go with my 'bundles'...I am a quirky quilter...I bundle all coordinating fabrics, in bundles, according to project,...and if I am shopping and come across fabs that would go with something, I snatch it up...most likely will not see it again. What planet are these one project at a time, people from, lol...it is to be admired, but I could never imitate! They must be so organized, so systematical and disciplined...and lonely! lol! My fabrics are my friends and my family. They love me, and I love them. I have to go in their just to gaze and pet and talk to them sometimes, promising that their day will come, and we will make great things together! I am in a quilty world, in cave! happiness abounds :XD: |

I've never been able to do that. I count the rest as stash builders. And one is never done before I'm buying more fabric. I never know what I'll be in the mood to do. |
QCrazy, I couldn't agree with you more when it comes to bundling. I do that, too. In my fabric closet I have many, many colors and fabric patterns that my husband is sure I may never see again or use in this lifetime.
See...sadly, my biggest problem is that I've gone from being satisfied with Joann, WalMart, Hobby Lobby fabrics to the more expensive and deadly-for-the-addiction quilting stores. Oh, the heart palpitations with a batik I haven't seen (or touched) before, or the gorgeous Asian fabrics, or "Oooooooh! What a wonderful color of....." I'm a sick woman. :roll: My income is now affected, so I will see just how strong my will is. I seriously plan on going through my closet and get reacquainted with some of my "friends" I haven't seen in years. BTW, I truly admire people who can work on and buy for only one project at a time...it's not in my genetic makeup and can't comprehend how to do that. My husband would be very organized like that if he quilted. I'm too impulsive. :oops: |

We have a really niiiice store here...hers is usually $8 up^!....but it is beautiful stuff. I was able to stay away for two years...was sick...didn't go anywhere, or do anything...but alas, I recently went in, and spent 92.00! crazy about what I got, mind you...but, my budget cannot handle it! I don't have any biases about fabrics, as long as you can't see 'grainy' lines, or see thru it, I'm good with it, but some of those pricier ones, are just so gorgeous and feel so, I-want-to-go-home-with-you. Did you know you could read a fabrics, emotions, by touching? lol! I read their little minds like braille. I will be working on a project, and have my mind on another...all the time. I am just starting to accept it. I am in the zone, when I channel all thoughts and energy on project in front of me...I usually can do that on machine...cutting, drawing, sorting...i'm all over the place. oh well, it's all fun! :D |
DH and I are going to visit some friends in the Bay Area tomorrow. I already printed the map quest directions to the Thimblecreek quilt store in Concord. WHY I'm going to this holy grail of fabric, I have no idea. Why I am exposing myself to the temptation of color and texture of my drug of choice (fabric) I do not know. I do know that I NEED more fabric like I need a hole in the head, and I bet that I will not leave the store empty-handed.

Card holding member here! Always afraid of a family intervention happening here :lol: :lol: DD gave me a gift card to Belks for m-day. I ask why not a card for fabric and she said mama, you don't need any more material, you need clothes!! When I get low on a color, say blues, less than 20, I start to get sick at my stomach and know that I have to have a fix! Ninnie |

I think it's bc I have grandbabies. I am not just a quilter...eegads, we have a 'sewer' in our mist...(hex signs...back you beast)...just kidding, I know that there are others, who do sewing projects, and not just quilts. Saying, that a lot of my stuff, is bought with abandon, bc i cannot resist, 'cute'. I am a sucker for it. In reality, if I don't become a machine demon, pretty soon, all four, will outgrow these fabrics. Guess i will make charity quilts then...for children. Part of me, just never grew up, all the way. I love kiddy stuff. I love sappy, and cute, and frilly, and oh, you name it. If it's fun, i'm there. :wink: You must be very organized, and don't have stuff spilling over, hogging all your house space, and hubby is content. My hubby has learned to live with me having the biggest room in the house...and I have mentioned more than once, that we should have taken this room for our bedroom, but, the one we use, has the master bath. anywhoo, he is just afraid, that one day, this room is going to explode and consume another room. Hey, what's wrong with that, I ask? I have gotten better, about budgeting, and really good, at rearranging to find more room, lol. I try to be frugal, and do ok, till it comes to the babies. SUCKER! see it on my forehead? lol. I am a good nana, though, and they have to pick up toys, eat in dining room, and cannot watch parent no-no tv programs. I said, I'm sentimental, doesn't mean, I don't do what's good for them. I'm balanced in everyroom except a fabric store...there...depends on the day, and my wallet. :wink: |
Hey quiltncrazy - my feeling is that the MBR doesn't need to be the biggest BR in the house. Just needs to be big enough for a bed, closet & dresser - and of course needs to be close to a bathroom. The BIGGEST room in the HOUSE has to be big enough to hold my STASH! Or in my case 2 rooms. The smallest room in the house holds my 2 sewing machines & serger, a small closet full of batting and sewing stuff, 2 dressers full of STASH & scraps, all upper walls lined with bookcases full of STASH, and a filing cabinet with patterns & other stuff. The biggest bedroom has bookcases with STASH, an ironing board, a big cutting table with STASH under it, a chair hidden under WIPs, 2 small dressers with scraps and 4 small dressers with languishing (I love that word) other crafts (scrapbooking & pictures, jewelry-making stuff & beads). My design wall is in the hall between the 2 rooms. I suppose I should take pictures - but I have to finish the black and white exchange blocks first. I'll take a picture of the STASH and sewing room when I do that AND a picture for my new avatar. Whew ! I can't believe I just said all that.

I told you that DH and I were going to stop at the Thimblecreek quilt store today.....and they had the perfect backing fabric for floral scrap quilt - so I bought 6 yards. They also had a great selection of 30s repro and I need some backing for my MIL's quilt - so I bought 6 yards. Then they had a BEAUTIFUL black-based paisley that called to me - so I bought 9 yards. Lordylordy - what am I going to do? I feel so weak. (But happy)

i used to think i had way too much fabric to be legal - until i had to make four quilts and really had no money to spend - i was able to find at least 80 fat quarters worth of material - if not more - plus the 5" borders and backing and binding - all in my sewing room - and I could do that several times over STILL

I love the honesty of this thread. It's one I wn't be sharing with my DH though, he just doesn't understand the need to touch, feel, and even inhale fabric. I find that the feel of fabric is often a determiner for what I buy.
I used to buy heaps of fabrics for all sorts of projects (yes I SEW too)and as a result have the stash to prove it. Every now and again I visit with my stash and decide that for the next project I still need a few other pieces. I am a lost cause but happy that I know I'm not alone. |
I now find it easier to go out and buy a bit of a certain fabric than looking through ALL of my stash. But I will not put my name on that comment. :lol: :lol: :lol:
