Thanks Billy, I get more comments on my carpeting. Can you believe when we re did our LR 2 years ago my DH chose this carpet? I must say it is a little darker than these pics and I love it! Everything seems to go with it.

It can be. I've made 3 quilts for "me", so I wanted them to be somewhat "Manly". Below are pics of them. I think they're not so much "manly" as they're not "girly", if that makes any sense.

Eddie, your quilts are beautiful! I especially like the brown and teal. What is the pattern name for this quilt?

It's called "Stretched Stars". I've also heard it called "Indian Hatchet".

You have to look, but there are some fabrics out there. The first man quilt I made, had boats and ships, the backing looks like boards.

I recently saw some great quilts during a demo at my quilt guild. This lady only goes to thrift stores and buys men's shirts. Then she makes the nicest men's quilts. She showed examples of flannel, dress shirt and tropical theme quilts. Quite nice. I'm going to try one.

penski 04-13-2010 07:49 PM

love the 3rd quilt

zz-pd 04-14-2010 12:36 AM

I can not buy any, so I have not looked at any thing with thought in it,. I do go look sometimes just to get out of the house, but that ends up depresing me more because I cant get any. Penny

When I need to make a "manly" quilt, I usually do a log cabin. If a light needs to be a floral, there's hardly any in it and doesn't appear to be femine. Just a thought.

Lostn51 04-14-2010 04:16 AM

My Proud Mary quilt has some floral prints in it and a Calico. But its not that noticeable OR maybe not that noticeable to me. But I work with a lot of floral prints when I make quilts anyway.

No, it's from a collection of wovens (can't remember the maker), but it was made from charm squares that they have. Since then, I've been looking at the shirts in my closet in a whole new way, though. :D

Yeah, I hear you. I do get shirts from the thrift stores and now I'm always eyeing everyones shirts, in line, walking by, etc.

Oh Oh, you better not carry scissors with you wherever you go.

MAN QUILTS ARE HARD FOR ME. I HAVE TO GET REALLY OUT OF MY BOX ( FLORALS ETC).

Slow2Sew 04-14-2010 10:11 AM

Eddie's "leather diamonds" quilt is a great design for color and pattern choice for the favorite men in our lives. I hope to copy it someday if he doesn't mind.
I have two sons and two grandsons (we have to import girls into the family!). I think it is harder to find most things for men: fabric, greeting cards, cute clothes for little boys, etc. The one exception is tools and automotive accessories!

I'm making a log cabin quilt for my son. I don't think it looks girly or maybe that's just me.

I don't believe I have seen a comment regarding using old ties for a quilt. I am working on one right now. You can go really crazy with ties. I love the Disney ties, I love the big floral ties, I love the golf, Americana, fishing, I love all the ties. I started going to thrift stores to buy mine, got most for a dollar or less.

Do you cut them up for piecing or do you use them in a special way? I'd love a pattern for using ties. Can you post the link or did you create the pattern yourself?

I wash the ties before I cut them up. Cold water with a little soap. I cant remember where I got the pattern I am using. I think i just googled "necktie quilt patterns".

My (guy) cousin once said, "What is wrong with flowers on a quilt? Guys like pretty things, too" He is a truck driver and married father of three.

I like the quilt for your husband. It looks pretty straight forward. Is this a particular pattern? If so, do you have a link? Or any instructions? Thanks.

I agree with him on this one, I like flowers also and I am about as manly as one can be!

I just made a nice Bargello as a community quilt made for a guy... but my Mom nabbed it for my Dad! If a guy gripes about a few flowers, tell him that Earth as we know it would not exist if there were no flowers in the world...and there'd probably be no people either!

It doesn't look girlie at all! In fact, it reminds me of the colors on the various fish we catch around here in Idaho. Mmmm, now I'm hungry.

Eddie, beautiful colors for you quilts. Thanks for sharing!

It doesn't look girly at all! Love the prints you selected!

Dragonfly Nana 04-18-2010 01:31 PM

My DH is the same way, though I'vee use mostly batiks for the few that I have kept.

Eddie...
Your quilts are beautiful. I like them all.

Glenn 04-18-2010 05:02 PM

I have made quilts for men using old men's wool suiting and backed it with cotton printed like matress ticking. I used shades of brown for one and the black and blues for another. the quilt was tied not quilted.

Norene B 04-18-2010 05:06 PM

I buy fabrics that have hunting dogs, ducks, pheasants, tractors, deer, buffalo, elk on them. I usually make more manly quilts than I do for women. Do a search on ebay and you can find some there or on the internet.

lclang 04-18-2010 05:52 PM

For men I like flannels, homespuns, shirtings, stripes, plaids, etc. (no flowers). Also made some wool quilts and nearly got run over when I put them out for grabs. The men loved them. My daughters left a closet full of wool jackets, slacks, vests, etc. when they got married and left home and I put them into quilts. They were warm and cozy, actually I think they were the all time favorites.

sueinbarre 04-20-2010 08:36 AM

When my father died, my mother saved a few of his shirts. Why don't you go to Goodwill, Salvation Army or yard sales and find some "gently worn" shirts that would work together and use the fronts and backs for quilting pieces. Don't plan complicated patterns, just start off easy and buy a couple of solids to border your pieces so they don't have to work precisely together, but will still be nice. I am doing this now for my mother who is now in a nursing home and misses Daddy more than ever.

When I wanted to make a quilt using plaids, I found plaid fabric was in short supply where I live; so, I headed to the local Goodwills and found an abundance of plaid 100% cotton shirts and the variety was almost endless.

Since that time, I have started purchasing tropical print shirts, again a wide selection. Some I cannot bare to cut apart so they hang in my closet and I wear them, they are soooo comfortable and they have POCKETS! But they do make great quilts as well.

Lostn51 04-21-2010 07:09 AM

I was in our local Hancock Fabrics and they have a large supply of plaids and masculine stripped quilting fabrics. I was almost tempted in buying some for my stash but I kept my composer and picked up only what I needed.
