We are seven months into our fabric moratorium BUT anyone can join at any time :) The official end of the moratorium is 1 November 2011. That’s only 4 months away. (The end is in sight).
Here’s a quick summary of the guidelines/rules: • no fabric purchases to start a new quilt top (till 1 November 2011) “Allowed” purchases include any item required to finish an existing project (either WIP or UFO), including but not limited to: • batting • backing or binding fabric • fabric (if nothing in your stash will work) • thread or notions • fabric purchased on a plan prior to 1 December 2010 (e.g. block of the month) So why are we doing this – the reasons are as varied as there are people involved. Some of those reasons include: • de-stashing • focus on finishing WIPs • financial constraints Want to bend the guidelines/rules a little? Sure – go for it. Some have chosen to: • commit for a shorter period of time • buy fabric if a really good sale comes along • setting a budget for how much they will spend each month • use 1 fabric from their stash each month • purchase new fabric for volunteer projects Threads that are related to this are: Original thread: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-79756-1.htm January’s updates: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-86351-1.htm February’s updates: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-95818-1.htm March’s updates: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-103716-1.htm April’s updates: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-112659-1.htm May’s updates: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-119900-1.htm June’s updates: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-127656-1.htm So now… it’s update time. What have you been working on? What have you (or have not) purchased? Cheers |
I've been good for the last month :)
But... I made a really radical decision and to be honest I really don't know how I am going to cope.... What I did was cut up all my credit cards and close the accounts. Eventually I will get a debit card (kind of like a credit card but money is already in the account). That is a long way off... So - no new purchases for me for a LOOONNNGGGGG time :( |

I use my bank debit and paypal debit card for everything and don't have any problems when I travel or make purchases on-line. And like you said, the nice thing is knowing that you already have the money to pay for it. Good luck. |
i've been good, too. i've organized my stash and i won't need go buy anything for a good long time :)
|
I'm hanging in there, also. I had a weak moment at the LQS a week ago and bought 1 yard of fabric to finish a quilt top that I was working on. I have some that would work, but!!!!!!
|
Still keeping the moritorium in my mind. I have not bought any yardages at all. I bought a jelly roll and charms a few weeks ago when I met another NE quilter at quilted threads in NH. But it is set aside for my DH to give me for my b'day this month. I also have gone to Salv. army to get a few remnants . I traded charms with a QB member for an I spy quilt. So far I have made5 I spys, and 2 more to go. Cutting scraps to make yoyos. Do not know what Ill do with them.
I feel great not spending mucho $ on fabric..I still look...butdo not buy. All that new fabric is so expensive. I will probably continue on this trend all the time. I love fabric it is a shame not to use it. |
I have only allowed myself the 4 Bs since before Christmas 2010...Backing, Batting, Border, Background. I haven't added to the stash, yet!
D My goal for 2011 is to use up as much stash as I can. |
I'm just glad I didn't sign anything..lol. Taking the 5th.
|
My only purchase last month was batting. The pieces I had left could only be used for very small wall quilts or table toppers. I made a window quilt for my mom and have finished 2 of the 4 table toppers/runners I am making for my 4 adult children. (Forgot to take pics. Will post when I get pics.) That has used up what batting I had. The last 2 the batting will have to be pieced. Everything I made this month came out of my stash or was a UFO/WIP. didn't even need to buy backing. YEAH!!!!
I am determined to keep the quilting needs confined to the sewing room. That way there is only one room that gets messy when I am in create mode. |

Although it's a good thing the moratorium ends November 1st.. The Houston International Quilt Festival's opening day to the public is November 3rd. Seeing as I live in the Houston area... you can bet your sweet fanny I'll be buying fabric...among other things! :D |
I'm still hanging in there. I haven't bought any fabric this year, with the exception of the finishing kit from a fellow boardmember to finish a UFO, which I still haven't finished, but, atleast I have the fabric to do so. With the various online fabric stores having FABULOUS SALES on fat quarters and such, it is really hard. But...I continue to honour the Fabric Moratorium.
|
I have bought fabric for a Quilt of Valor. I have bought some fat quarters. I still get my 6 half yards every month. But I have started working on many of my UFO's. They still need to be quilted, but during June I made about 15 quilt tops. I even made 4 more tops from pieces laying around. I have 1 dog pillow finished waiting to go to the ASPCA & 1 that is 2/3 full of fabric scraps. Found more fabric I forgot I had. It feels good to get these things worked on, even better to get them finished. Hang in there, everyone.
|
There's too much going on in my life right now. I haven't touched the sewing machine for the past 2 weeks. I won't be tempted to buy because I have no desire to make anything. If things slow down within the next few weeks, I hope to get back to the sewing room and soothe my nerves.
Good Luck to everyone for July. |
Has my quilting buddy been talking to you? After seeing my stash, she ordered me not to purchase any more fabric until I use what I have. I haven't been quilting that long so I didn't think my stash was that large, but maybe it is.
Anyway, I'm happy to say that I used only the fabric in my stash for my last two projects! And you know what? It's kind of a good feeling! :D |
I bought some fabric yesterday. I was at a thrift store and found some good pieces. I got about 7 1/2 yards for a cost of 46 cents a yard. One piece was almost 3 yards. It has 6 repeats so I'm thinking a kaleidoscope fan quilt in the future.
|
I put myself on a fabric diet months ago. I make mostly charity quilts and have challanged myself to use my stash. So far, so good.
|
I bought some FG but even those were limited as they were on sale but other wise am not allowed to buy more fabric.
|
I finished a small quilt I had started who knows when. I even used fabric from my stash for the backing.
|
I finally had a month where I bought nothing. No fabric, books, patterns, notions, etc. It really helps to ask do I really need it. I appreciate all the help I've gotten here. Thanks all. Pat

Don't tink I am doing very well. While I am definately using up stash, to make quilts for people and animals, I have bought some new fabric yesterday. Ok, here goes, my name is Victoria and I am a fabriholic. That was my first step. I am trying. I have not bought as much as I would have last year. I have even given away doubles of my stuff to the ASG neighborhood group I belong to. We bought a small sewing storage box and I filled it up with most of my stuff.
We only had to buy 5 pieces out of the 36 pieces we stocked the box with. Feels good. |
Yesterday, I bought 3--1/4 meter pieces of fabric for a border. It was on sale and I used my LQS card so the cost was low. I am so proud of myself because I am staying within my budget and using up my stash.
|
I am only working on projects that use what I own. If I get to the point that I can't make something with what I have left, I will then consider buying fabric, but not unless I get to that point. I have not bought fabric, for one month, today.
|
I fell off the wagon....in a BIG way!! Went to the big annual sale of a LQS yesterday with an enabling friend of mine. In my defense, I was spending birthday money given to me by my father, but I went beyond that. I saw a table upon table of gorgeous fabrics at 40% off and all bets were off. I bought enough of each to use as backings for charity quilts. And remnants were an extra 10% off...too much for one human to resist!! We went and had lunch to recover, then went to yet another LQS that she had never been to. I was a little better in this store, but...oh well....there's always August!!
|
The only fabric I've purchased since Nov. has been used for backing, and eventually I'll need buy batting, but so far,so good (or bad, however one looks at it) There'll be a huge temptation the 1st week of Aug, at which time the Lowell Quilt Festival takes place. Usually a great time to shop various vendors who come from across the country, so that will be tough to resist! But resist I will, because after a recent inventory, it's ridiculous the amount of fabric here, and even crazier is all the fabric I'd forgotten about. It's making me ill!
|
Our guild is having a class by Harriet Hargrave in August. I have known for months she was coming and had planned for it. I will need to purchase a book, batting and specialty threads I don't have but figured there would be things on the supply list I would need.
I am so excited about this class. She will be teaching FMQ for domestic machines. I've wanted to get better at FMQ for a long time. I can do stippling and meandering very well, this will be the next step. |
OK, I went to Beverly's today to buy the border fabric for the next Round Robin. Nothing, I mean NOTHING I had even remotely worked with the colors, and since I had NO say in the color choice, who's to blame a girl for needing to go fabric shopping.
....and Connecting Threads DID have a 30% off on thread which I love and which I needed some more neutral. I mean, after all, neutral is ALWAYS necessary. |
I posted some pics of a past and some current projects. They are at: http://quiltingboard.com/t-140876-1.htm
Everything came from my stash. Thanks for looking. K |
