Thank you great aunt jacqui......the only rules for myself are 1-no buying of material and #2 - Except when the wal-mart dept. in circleville goes on it's way out and I can get it for at least 1/2 off! (was told they were going out in spring, if it's true and I can afford to, I will get what I can!)

Well ... I haven't bought any yet this year, but I did answer a "freecycle" ad for a bag of scraps from a local drama department. Been thinking about a crazy quilt or a texture quilt with these lovely unusual fabrics!
|
I've made 4 baby quilt tops from my stash. Haven't looked for backs yet, but babies like color right? I've got lots of color.

Haven't bought any fabric, but am sewing up some squares of double knits that my mom cut up more then 20 years ago before she passed away. Will probably need to purchase some flannel for the back, but have several more quilt tops I can make before I break down and do that. I'm surprised at how bright and cheerful those saturated colors are!
|
i've been cutting apart old jeans. I have plenty between my husband any my son! not sure what I'll do with them yet, but i'm sure when the time comes to use them, a pattern or idea will scream at me to use them up!
|
I've made a ton of jeans quilts. My favorite was a nine patch with a jean pocket in the center square, backed with flannel, warm and cozy!

I didn't commit until the New Year and I haven't had a car this month due to totaling mine, but I have resisted online shopping and buying from board members. They are killing me with batiks and some florals, but I'm staying strong. I had to make two trips to the LQS for narrow sashings. I came out with ONLY the 3/8 of a yard I went in for. Thank you for the wake up call.

Cool to read all these ideas-from-stash! I love it.
I seem to have come through my doldrums, settling into a nice calm pace. Nice productive day today. Finished quilting my latest quilt this week, now stitching down binding. Funny color on the back, I need good daylight for this. Put a proper hem on my laundry door curtain. I made and hung that curtain about a year ago and it's been patient ever since, dangling its loose end. Now it's beautiful, and complete. Cut strips from the 21 fabrics I pulled from stash the other day, started sewing strata for bargello. Fun! Also ordered 6yds of fabric from Thousands of Bolts. It's for borders for a quilt I'm making, so I'm allowed, under my rules. (I know some of you buy zero at the moment, it's not what I'm doing but great kudos to you!) I'm kind of proud of myself with this purchase. After sifting through Thousands I had 13 fabrics in my basket, all similar. Previously I would have been likely to buy all of them... Not now, yippie! I just trimmed my selection down and down patiently until I had the six I feel I'll need and my choice looked just right. It all feels so good. :) |

My update: so far, so good.
I just got the next IRR top in the mail and I know I have some fabric from my stash that will work, but probably not enough. I'll buy for it if I have to but the challenge will be to avoid overbuying simply to pad my stash. I'll be going to Fabric Depot but may need to wear some blinders. There's so much there with beautiful potential! |
I started on Dec. 1, so far so good. I'm taking a class tomorrow for a lop-sided log cabin quilt that uses scraps so hopefully I'll be using up lots of bits and pieces.

Well so far so good for me. In December my son and I drove to our nearest large town and he dropped me at a large fabric outlet store, I had to buy backings, told him if I bought any other fabric he could make me walk home (its 100 kilometres or about 60 miles I think). He actually checked my bag...... phew lucky I only bought backing fabric.
I made 7 charity quilt tops in December and worked out a system to use all my scraps not just pull the fabrics I like. I went through all my fabric bins and pulled out all my fat quarters and put them in a tub then I pulled out anything less than a fat quarter and dragged that tub into my sewing room. (All my fabric is stored in a store room) Then the fun began as I color coded and stacked everything on the spare bed. THEN as I began making scrappy quilt tops I would go through each stack and pull out the smallest piece and USE IT UP, if there was enough left over I cut squares for nine patch blocks (have 38 already) and the smallest scraps I sewed onto paper strips to be either used in borders or tube blocks later. I have had to stop sewing and start quilting otherwise I am going to be overwhelmed with how many tops needing to be finished. Quilted one and hope to get another quilted this weekend. Stay strong !!! |
Keep up the good work everyone. Together we can do it.
I'm hanging in there, bought a few pieces from our guild's garage sale for WIPs I am working on for Home of the Brave quilts. This past week,A quilt angel brought me two copy paper boxes full of fabrics. I will use some for HOTB, some for school bags for missions, some for mission quilts, and a few for small quilt backs. Not having a car has made it easy for me to stay out of the LQS. :-) Still need to finish a UFO for Jan. My new motto is "a finished quilt is better than UFO's or PIGS" |
So far, so good....I promised no florals (I have an abundance!). Despite seeing several "screaming bargains", I have been strong. Mid-year I will be using up as much floral from my stash as I can (two, maybe three quilts). I went to Textile Traders yesterday and only bought thread, so I'm feeling pretty happy with myself!

I used a large amount of the squares to make "corn bags" to heat up in the microwave to keep our hands warm. I sewed around three sides, turned it right side out, put in regular popcorn, turned the opening down towards the inside, and sewed it closed. They're PERFECT SIZE for your pockets. |
Was at my LQS yesterday for a sew in. I did not buy any fabric. I did buy three patterns. Does that count? Have to keep my LQS in business.
|
I am so proud of you guys! Keep up the good work. I hate I am not able to join you guys. I need help bad.

I joined last Thursday. Yesterday, I got three "newsletters" with offers. I looked, but didn't buy. For me I'm adding, remove myself from newsletters except for Jinny Beyer and Harriet Hargrave. All of you are so productive. Right now I don't get much time to quilt. So I have to stop buying. There is no room for any more! Not that I have that much. But there is just so much room. My goal is to finish my daughter and son-in-law's 10th anniversary king size quilt by May. They'll be married 17 years in July! You inspire me!

I'm back! It is now Sunday. On Saturday I was tempted to buy a kit I saw in a magazine. I've not been renewing my subscriptions. From now on I'm only buying magazines and/or books for birthday or Christmas gifts. Like this board, they are fun and I enjoy them, but I need to quilt. I rarely go to LQS because of arthritis. This moratorium has really helped me realize how easily I give in to temptation and how I need to get away from temptation. Thank you.

Hi all! Just found this thread and would like to join in all the fun. I plan to follow the original rules. So far this year - a whole whopping 16 days - I haven't purchased any quilting supplies. 8 > )

Today I made a carrying case for my new laptop. Used only small leftover pieces of fabric and batting. I'm feeling very smug with all the money I'm saving LOL

I was snowed in for several days off and on a few weeks ago so I made this project. I had all the fabrics and bought the pattern over a year ago. I planned to do it last winter but we never got snowed in (this year has more than made up for it). Now that I've been over 6 weeks not buying any fabric I just don't feel the urge to go shopping, its like I feel I can make due with what I have...and I can.

I signed up for a bag class in the morning quilt guild. It is a members teaching member fundraiser for the guild. I figured I could get the fabrics out of my stash, which I can, however, it requires the only weight iron on interfacing I don't have in my stash.
The evening guild has a yearly challenge. The required fabric to be used is not a color I usually have in my stash, so I have started going through the shelves to see what I can use with it and will set it aside until I make a decision on what I am going to do. What is in my stash might help me come up with an idea. This, too, is a fundraiser for the guild. (I got second place last year so really want to try again.) It is due in June. |

Marie M. I love that pattern, is there a name????, I love challenging myself, with patterns that are outside the box |
Congrats to all who are 'successful' with not buying fabrics. I'm doing well too (it helps that I don't go out shopping!). :)
I love when pictures are posted of projects using stash...it's so motivating. Keep it up - they're AWESOME!! |

I went to Joann's today for batting and only got that and needles. Didn't even look at the flannels that are on sale. Found backing for the 4 baby tops I have pieced from my stash. Actually for 2 of them I used a sheet. Got new sheets at Goodwill. Last week got one for $4, today they were 1/2 priced. Lots of good fabric for kids quilts in sheets.

Ok will do tomorrow afternoon, DH is due home any minute and I am busily cooking dinner (definitely not playing on the computer)
Will post in pictures so hope you find it. |
Well done to you all- I am trying to "shop at home" at the moment too- not just for fabric either- waaay too much "stuff" in this house, and very little need to go out buying more. I am finding things I did not even remember I had bought. And it is already mine!
Stay strong everyone. |
Hanging my head in shame. I was at the store yesterday to choose some fabric for the next IRR round (can't always get from my stash for these) . . . walked past the FQ bundles and oh, the polka dots . . . brought some home. My first slip.
Beginning again today. |
