Got a question about the fabric, by brand names....is Waverly a good cotton for quilting???? and please give me some brand names to look for when shopping. Some of the cotton is thin and I would like to get the better material that will last. Thanks

I don't know if Waverly makes quilting material. They do make great curtains and bed items. There are many brands of quilting fabrics out there. I think you can tell which is the best by feel. Or hold it up to a light if you can see thru it it's too thin.

Thanks for the info. Maybe, I can ask the people in Hancock's. Only place I have to Shop, except Wal-Mart and the fabric seems awful thin??

My favorite is Hoffman for quilting, but that is the designs. I dont like walmarts fabric. I usually shop on line or the LQS, when fabric is on sale. Usually the more expensive the better quality. I dont usually like Joann's either, I find when I go to use it the weave is too loose. My daughter has called me a fabric snob for years, and I am, especially when buying clothes I know I can make better, and cheaper myself lol.

Hancock's not getting any better these days!
Waverly does make some cottons, but it usually like a sateen meant more for home decor than actual quilting/peicing. It can be rather thick and might have a finish on it! When in doubt always read the selvage edge and the end of the bolt!

Thanks for all the info..I guess I need to take a trip to Montgomery,AL...the closest big city..Check out the LQS shops.

Moda and RJR are both good brands as well.

I've never been disappointed with Moda or Free Spirit...

There is Robert Kaufman and Hoffman of California, Moda, RJR, Marcus Fabrics, Timeless Treasures and many more. This is a website that has the manufactures to search..

You can also do a general search of quilt fabric manufacturers.

I really like Moda and Thembleberrys.

Some of the fabrics have LOTS of sizing--and the Walmart stuff is the cheapest grade the manufacturers make--
Try shopping online---we can all give good suggestions there if you ask!

I don"t limit myself to just looking at quilting cottons. You can find some lovely cottonsd in the fashion sections too. I have yet to go into a LQS, have shopped online. That is so easy, but you can never be positive if you will be happy until it arrives. I have bought nice cottons at Wal Mart, and at Hancocks, but I avoid the ones that feel too thin. But then again, cotton shrinks, and some of those thin, loosely woven cottons get better feeling after they have been washed and a little starch added before cutting. I like to take a hunk of fabric and rub it between my thumbs, hard! You can tell a lot by doing that.

I always thought Waverly was more for home dec things. I love Hoffman, Moda, RJR,Robert Kaufmann etc.
There are so many!

Moda, Hoffman, Rowan, RJF, Andover, just to name a few.

My favorite is the silky feel of Benartex, but Moda is right behind with it's more stable feel. I had to put a connectingthreads.com batik in with my Moda Fandango fabrics and the difference is amazing. I swear I can feel that piece stretching as I handle it. It'll be fine once it's all surrounded.

When I am in the fabric store or the fabric section of WalMart, I don't pay attention to the manufacturer, just the feel. I bought yards and yards Wednesday and couldn't tell you who made any of them except one Benartex piece I was already familiar with.

Some of my favs are Kaufman, Moda, Northcott, and a new one I like is Avlyn.

The bottom line for me is how it feels when I pick it up.

I have plenty of Walmart fabric in my stash, but only buy it if it's not thin or too stiff.

I love my Moda! Awesome quality!
