Fabric online

I am very new to shopping for fabric online. I'm trying to match a color, but how true are the colors that you see on the screen? I thought if I scanned my fabric and see what it looked like I would know. Well it is totally a different color then the fabric is. What kind of luck do you all have with the colors being true on the computer screen?

What I try to do is if the website offers it, match colors through their systems. My first stop is equilter, here is the current Hoffman color challenge, you can click on a color in the fabric and it will show you other fabrics that match. More or less. Certain colors are "in" but even within the same label there may be differences much less from between brands.

it really varies depending on your computer, but I've had pretty good luck and many places will send you a swatch for a token price ($3 usually).

Some of it depends on *your* monitor, and some depends on the camera settings the photographer uses. There really isn't a reliable way to tell how true the colors are.

I thought I was buying a deep almost forest green fabric once. but when it came, I found it was actually a bright, almost turquoise green. That was a surprise!

You can't count on something looking the way it looks on the computer. Most of my stash is misfires from ordering. If I'm trying for a specific shade, I always buy two or three choices if it's a smallish amount. If the fabric needed is a larger amount, as for a border, sometimes I'll take a chance and order it all, and sometimes I'll request a swatch or order the minimum amount, so as to be sure it's right.

Every once in awhile when I order fabric online I have had a couple of times that the color is no where near what it looked like on the computer. I guess it is just the chance we need to take.

Like Joe's Mom, I made several buys that did not end up matching what I bought them for and now are just part of my stash. I've only had luck when I am buying a range of colors (think scrappy) in which the colors don't need to be an exact match.

I only buy online at Equilter and so far all colors/prints are quite near what my pc monitor shows.
Also handy is the find this color option, viewing 1 fabric is a colored block under it, click on it to find more.
