I worked in a quilt shop for a couple of years. The owner priced the fabric at 65% above cost because that covered some of the costs of shipping she had to pay. Quilt shops are a lot more than just fabric. They offer us classes, their knowledge, new techniques, and friendly service. You don't get all these things at JoAnn's.

I can tell you this - quilt shop owners work their tails off and make a comfortable living but nothing extravagant.

How would it be illegal to buy something at retail and then resell it again at retail?

Actually... I think there is a shop in my area that has does just that. Or at least did, to start off with, when she opened up shop after the local Wal-Mart stopped selling fabric. There was a market that was no longer being served, and she stepped in to fill the gap, wisely knowing that her customer base would be comprised of frugal souls.

Doesn't it (re-selling) happen on eBay all the time, where one person buys a set of whatever and then splits it and sells the items separately? How would fabric be different?

I'm no lawyer, but I think the First Sale Doctrine would allow for this.

What am I missing here?
