when you make aquilt, say since i m a beginner i will only use squares and perhaps stripes.
how many different fabrics do you use ?

i m buying from ebay so say do i need to buy 2 packs of 3 different colours, or should i little bit of that and a little bit of this kinda.

It really is just a matter of what you want, there is no right or wrong, just have fun and buy what you like, Just my opinion :lol:

My first quilt was three fabrics. Pink, purple and a princess print. (DGD asked for those colors.) It was fun. Do what feels right for you.

My first quilting class used the Yellow Brick Road pattern and I had a bundle of 32 different fat quarters. Looks like a very scrappy quilt and I love it.

That's a tough question to answer. There are some nice patterns that can easily be done in two contrasting colors. In that case, you would need to worry about purchasing enough fabric yardage for the size you want to make. Most patterns specify how much fabric you need and many now give options for fat quarters.

If you want to make it scrappy, then you can always buy more if you run out. Don't worry, you will soon have a stash to choose from like the rest of us fabricoholics. :D

I do like using charm packs, a set of precut fabrics that are chosen from the same line of the same designer. So I will not fail in matching colors. My favorite is the ones from Moda Daydream line by Deb Strain..

Rail Fence is very easy - that was what I did for my first quilt. The only matching is the corners. The suggestion for 2 color is good, too. Also, the idea of making something small is a good idea, so you can get an idea of what you're doing without a great big commitment! Most of all, HAVE FUN!

I also love to buy fabrics. They are so fun to play with and stroke. But, if you are going to really make a first quilt. Find a patten you just love and buy the fabrics to make that one. That way you will have a focus.

You see, you stash will grow as you have left overs or see something you can't live without. But, the process of making a quilt, for me, starts with a great pattern I want to make.
