A couple of weeks ago I had bought this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fabric I saw at Wal-Mart, thinking that I'd either make a quilt for a friend of mine who loves the franchise or for his unborn child.

The other day I noticed on the fabric's selvage it says "Do not use for children's sleepwear". I was wondering if anyone else had gotten fabric with this on it and if they knew why it has that. But more importantly, would it be safe to make a quilt (possibly for a child) out of this (I'm beginning to wonder if there's some chemical in the fabric that would be a safety hazard)?

I think they have to put that on fabric that is a "juvenile" type print that has not been treated with fire retardant stuff. I believe all children's sleepwear has to be fire retardant or fire resistant. I found this on google: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml00/00129.html
I don't think you need to worry about that for a quilt. :D

The fire retardent they use for PJ's washes out after a few washes. I for one would not want to wrap my little ones in chemicals. Most Moms wash all the baby clothes before they are used.
Now if I had a kid who was a fire bug, Iwould get him a water bed and keep a bucket of water handy. and take care to keep lighters and matches put up. We had one in our family, he burned the curtains on the porch, and two fields........If he had set the house on fire all the fire retardent fabric in the world would not help. I am one of those people who has developed enviremental alergies.......chemicals don't always make life better.
I think you find the warning on all children's prints. :)

I kind of figured there wasn't some toxic chemical in the fabric (why would they sell it in the first place if it were toxic?), but I just had to make sure so I didn't end up making a quilt resulting in chemically poisoning one of my best friends or his child. Thanks for the info! :D
