fabric suggestions

As much as I enjoy quilting, I have found that I am challenged when it comes to picking fabric. I am wanting to make a flower garden quilt, but I am a little worried about what fabrics to pick. I have a pattern but I am stuck because of a fabric. Do any of you guys have fabric suggestions for a flower garden quilt? (my pattern is to use hexagon blocks) Thank you

I've made one of these and just used pretty flowery material for my hexagons with a solid yellow in the middle. I think a flower garden can be anything you find attractive, using scraps would be a good way to bring all those bits and pieces you love into one quilt. Putting a solid white around the flowers is a good way to break it up.

If you're talking the old fashioned Grandmother's flower Garden made with 1 to 2" hexes then anything goes. Most I've seen use light colored solid for the paths between the flowers and pretty much anything and everything else for the flowers. Mine is yellow. It has yellow paths and the centers of the flowers are the same yellow. The flowers are all different with two rings of different fabrics around each flower. They're a great scrappy pattern.

When I made mine, I tried to buy most of my colors all at once. Then later found more fabrics that I liked more than the once I had. So I would suggest you decide what you want the center to be - I chose yellow. And from there you buy fabric as you go. It does help to keep pieces of what you have so that you don't buy them twice. I did a white path through mine. They are rather addictive - I have enough flowers left over the make another full size quilt. I have been looking for a green to use as the path, just haven't found the right one yet.

What size hexagon do you plan to use?

Thank you for your replies. I saw some pictures with green for the path, and I really liked that. I was thinking about 3" hexagons... but I haven't started anything yet so that may change. :o

I did mine 3/4" hexies. the ctrs were either solid or with a cute bug the petals were prints and the next layer was all different greens. some with bugs and such. it's finished size is 55 x 65 and it's on my kittys chair (throne) that is by the window, overlooking the woods across from me. (where the critters hang out). show us some pics.

I had this pattern for years before I got to doing my GFG. I used the plastic hexs that pop out. Took two years to make it. I used mostly RK Kona cotton .
