Need to add a piece to each animal square......which looks best? Top, middle, or bottom? Thanks!

I'd frame each animal block with either matching or contrasting fabric just like the alternate squares.

Looks like you may be asking where to add the extra strip of fabric, not the color? If so, I would alternate adding to the top of one and the bottom of the next, etc so the printed/embroidered designs would not all be in a straight line which might just emphasize any variances.

Even with enlarging the photo, I don't see a difference. The fabric used is NOT making the applique POP.
