Our Bee purchased two bolts of white fabric and were going to split the yardage, however, both of the fabrics seemed very thin. When I got home, I checked all the white/ivory/cream fabric in my stash and it seemed they were all thinner than my colored fabric. Is this common and does the dying process make the colored fabric seem thicker?

Hi , I have worked in a quilt shop for a few years and would say that the thickness of your fabric depends more on the thread count and the manufacturer (brand on the end of the bolt). I don't really think it would have much to do with the dye used. Hope this helps.

The thread count and purpose of the fabric would seem to be the answer. I have found that the thinner fabrics don't wear as well on a quilt you are going to use, but they are great for display projects as long as they are not see-thru.

If by thinner you mean you can see thru them, yes that is a problem with whites and offwhites. I hand dye fabric and am amazed how much thicker the fabric feels and behaves after the dying process. Although I am hardly an expert in this area, it does seem that the dying process has something to do with the hand of a fabric.

The dye clings to the thread and bolsters the thickness, thus, making the thinner fabric "feel" thicker. :lol: :D 8)
