Fabric at Walmart

I am not sure if anybody cares about this anymore, but I made a trip to a Walmart here in NJ that had fabric in the past. Had a conversation with the lady there and told me that Walmart has heard loud and clear that people want fabric departments. Over 700 stores are getting fabric departments back and many in NJ/PA who had their departments cut back or closed are revamping back up.

leatheflea 11-17-2011 12:58 PM

Dont get your hopes to high, our store brought back about a fourth of what it had before, and its lower quality and higher priced.

ManiacQuilter2 11-17-2011 01:03 PM

The Walmart super store in Chino Hills, California never closed it's fabric section. Yes, the quality of some of the fabric is NOT worth the price but isn't that happening at JAF too????

donnalynett 11-17-2011 01:16 PM

Our Walmart brought back their fabric department however it is much smaller than before. The quality of their fabric at this store has greatly improved over what it used to be.

QuiltnNan 11-17-2011 02:21 PM

my WM only brought back precuts :(

ChaiQuilter 11-17-2011 02:37 PM

My Wal-Mart now has fabric for the first time. Not much of a selection and noone to cut it, of course...

sandilee 11-17-2011 03:18 PM

Our local WalMart never got rid of their fabric dept. I have purchased almost all of my fabric there and have been very happy wi th it. We are lucky that we have quite a selection.
The other WalMarts around the area are just now getting fabric back. They are o.k., not as great as my local one but it may take time for them to accumulate the fabrics.

Hi DixieLee,
The closest Walmart to me is in Boonton and it has a pretty extensive fabric department. Lucky for me because NJ is
sorely lacking Quilt shops or fabric sellers

katigirl 11-18-2011 12:34 AM

Went shopping with my neice for fabric for a quilt and was disappointed at the lack of good fabric variety. We ended up going to Joann's to find what we needed. Was sad to see they had so little selection. Earlier in the year it had seemed to be better.

emsgranny 11-18-2011 01:14 AM

We now have one but its sooo small that its not even funny I think they are doing this to prove a point lol I dont think they wanted to bring it back but if they dont make money on it its because the selection is poor!!!

sassey 11-18-2011 04:00 AM

I have gave up on walmart I dont think mine will ever have any fabric

Same with mine. Better than nothing, but I have not purchased a thing yet...

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 11-18-2011 04:04 AM

We have a new SuperWal mart and they haven't brought material back. Really disappointed. The one at the beach which is 3 hrs from me has lovely fabric.

Rose Marie 11-18-2011 05:04 AM

Mine is so small it is useless. Not much selection and matching fabrics for a project is impossible. Plus whoever picks out the fabrics they stock is not a quilter.

Carie 11-18-2011 05:11 AM

Our Wal-Mat is full of beautiful materials - all at reasonable prices. It's especially nice since we have to go at least an hour away to a quilt store! I guess we're lucky because an hour away doesn't sound too bad, does it?

redpurselady 11-18-2011 07:29 AM

Went to a Walmart close to me that brought back the fabric and I was really disappointed in the quality.

bearisgray 11-18-2011 07:35 AM

It appears that different WalMart stores have very different selections of fabrics available.

Once upon a time, I thought that all of the stores in a particular chain carried the same things! Wrong!!!!

The WalMart in Duarte, CA, never got rid of their fabric department. I was there a couple days ago and the employee cutting my fabric said fabric is returning to all the WalMarts because "they listened to their complaining customers." Their prices have climbed steadily the past couple of years for their fabrics but the average quality has remained the same. They have gotten rid of their bargain table too.

misseva 11-18-2011 07:52 AM

I have three WalMarts within driving distance from me ranging from 20 miles to 50 miles. One of the smaller ones never got rid of their fabric and now have a very large variety plus it's reasonable priced. So thankful.

Went to one last night that has put fabric back. It's a small space; kind of a "fabric island" in the middle of the big store. Very happy with the selections I made for the next applique quilt I plan to start. Prices are higher, but isn't everything? Nice selection of notions; still have the pre-cuts too. One of the fabrics fades a little; reaffirms my choice to always rinse before using, as this happens even with some of the lqs fabrics too.

We have a really good fabric department here in Pocatello, Idaho. You do have to watch the fabrics because some quilting fabrics are pretty thin. But that is any fabric store.

The same at WM in my area!!!

Dee 11-18-2011 06:34 PM

Our local Walmart didn't get the dept. back yet. The other Walmart 20 miles away has pre cuts. I was very disappointed. So hope Pa. here get the fabric dept. back as it was.

franc36 11-18-2011 07:09 PM

Wish my WalMart would get fabric back.

athomenow 11-18-2011 07:40 PM

Shopped both JoAnns and WalMart yesterday and found the coordinating fabrics I was looking for at WalMart. I paid $6 a yd and it is very nice. I bought some at JoAnns but it took me forever to find the 4 or 5 fabrics to make a Bow Tuck. I think you just have to look everywhere because I see really low quality at JoAnns as well.

babindg12200 11-19-2011 08:17 AM

Our WM got their fabric dept. back, and I use it all the time. The fabric is great, the colors bright, and I am so glad it is back.

Pat P 11-22-2011 04:00 PM

Walmart here made a half hearted attempt but not near as nice as before. Guess what was discounted in carts? Alot of the party items they replaced the fabric with! I completely stopped shopping there, go back for cream for DH coffee!

tslowery 11-26-2011 12:23 PM

Our store has fabric but the quality of the fabric is horrible...china mostly and no label to tell you what it is and most of it you could read a newspaper thru it is so thin....ugh

serenitybygrace 11-26-2011 12:34 PM

One of our WalMart's has fabrics. Some of the fabrics are not what I would want to quilt or make things with. Some of the fabrics are "Premium" and are of good quality. I also got some nice cotton quiflt batting to make potholders with. I had already gotten the fabric and Insul-bright.

Dina 11-26-2011 12:39 PM

We have three Wal-Marts in Wichita Falls, TX. One has had fabric all along, one had some and then didn't, and one never had any. When I shop at the one that has fabric, I usually find something that pleases me. It is one of the first places I shop for fabric. Then Hobby Lobby and then Hancocks. I find their fabric all about the same.

The fabric dept. has recently been reorganized though, apparently to stock more fabric. I wonder if the Wal-Mart I never get to has got fabric back? Hmmmmm.

BarbM32 11-26-2011 01:08 PM

The WM here in Ar that I have been to are either non existant fabrics and just plain junk

rootyr 11-26-2011 01:13 PM

Yes, our Walmart near Albany NY has put fabric back in their store!

rootyr 11-26-2011 01:14 PM

Yes, I agree the fabric quality is terrible!

Same here in South Carolina, I was so excited when Wal-Mart brought back their fabric, but I can't find anything there that I like. Not much of a selection, and poor quality fabric.

sunflower1944 11-26-2011 02:17 PM

There are 2 WalMarts near me. The closest one has tons of pre-cuts and pre-packaged yardage. The 2nd one still has fabric on the bolts and a great selection too!

sniktasemaj 11-26-2011 06:07 PM

I went in to Walmart today, and much to my surprise, there were bolts of fabric again!
