Fabrics fading

It used to be that fabrics did not fade very much. Then the chemical...formaldehyde I think...was banned. Now the fabric seem to fade so quickly. I make a quilt that is "special" to me, and then I hide it so it won't fade. Is that crazy or what? Anyhow, does anyone have any tips on preserving your quilts' colors?

Cotton fabrics fade from sunlight and washing. I did a few dragger quilts for kids years ago in polyester/cotton broadcloth and they still look like new.:D

I thought I read recently that newer fabrics don't fade much now...maybe I read that backwards.

First try to keep it out of the sun. If your quilt covers your bed near a window and you have blinds, I would pull the blinds then as the sun moved you could open them. I wouldn't wash them anymore than you have to. Vacuum them. Many people do this. Throw a dryer sheet in with the quilt in the dryer to freshen up. I have "air fluff" setting on my dryer. 10 minutes should do it. if you have an area like a patio or carport and hang across some chairs so it doesn't hit the ground. Get some fresh air flowing through. Friend of mine also takes hers to commercial Laundromat and washes in cold water. She only washes when she has to. Usually about every 5-6 years, maybe. And that's a big maybe!

Several things contribute to fading, sunlight, detergents, friction and even the chlorine in municipal water supplies. To preserve colors, keep quilts out of direct sunlight, and even flouresant light will fade fabrics over time. Use a mild soap, especially if you wash frequently. Don't "pack" the washer as friction of fabric on fabric will dull or fade the colors in time with many washings.
