Facing a quilt
My quilt group was introduced to facing a quilt instead of binding. I looked it up online. Does anyone have experience with this way of binding a quilt?

One of my guilds has an opportunity quilt finished this way. The quilt uses a border print for the last border and this was the perfect way to finish the edge without losing any of the border print. And it lays really flat.

I have faced a few quilts. Just last Thursday, I had a friend tell me that she cuts away the batting only after sewing on the binding to avoid a slight bulge when turning the facing back. I am going to give that a try next time. I like to sew a line around the edge after turning to keep the facing to the back. But it can give you a wave.

I cannot think of any reason why it would not be a great finish in lots of applications. For instance, I think it would be especially good for scallops or other non-straignt line edges. Typical binding is hand stitched on the back; so, why not a facing. I would turn the outside edge of the facing under 1/4 inch and press or stitch in order to be able to finish the back so it is hidden.

I use it when I want to finish an edge that is not straight like Grandmother’s Flower Garden hexagon edge.

There is an excellent video by Joe Cunningham on facing quilts on youtube.

What a great idea! I just watched the video above. Easy!
|
Thanks for the YouTube link! Sounds pretty easy!
|
Thank You for the link. Always fun to learn and try something different.

With my art quilts, I prefer to do facing rather than binding. Google search:
Facing vs Binding video by Debby Cresanto Very easy and I am happy with the results. |
Marci Baker has an excellent video showing facing on a GFG.

I’ve used it multiple times on wallhangings.

I used this method for my scalloped edge on the Jane Stickle quilt. Finishing Quilt Edges, Marci Baker of Alicia's Attic,

I used a facing on my collage wall hanging. I looked at several methods on YouTube and then mainly followed the method from Quilt Roadie. https://youtu.be/UggDe8VF7lc

I've used facing on garments for 50 years now. I don't really think about using them on quilts, but it's a good idea. Thanks for the links.
|
I faced a queen sized quilt. I didn't want to cut the pattern off with a binding or border. I used this tutorial: https://thesillyboodilly.blogspot.co...y-to-face.html
|
As I was learning how to quilt from my mother, that's they only way we did it. I didn't know about binding until I was in my 20's.
|
Ahhh Haaa moment !
|
Thank you! Never heard of this! Will be trying it soon. Thanks for the good u tube videos. Deb

Thank you I watched all 3 tutorials. Great idea!!

I face the majority of my art quilts.
I use glue and an iron to tack them down on the back, about 1/4" back from the edge of the inside of the facing so that I can get them absolutely straight with a ruler along the sides and then I hand sew the back. Saves having to put a million pins in to keep everything folded over while you hand sew it in place. Watson |
First I have ever heard of facing a quilt. It’s a great way to do it. I will try it on my next wallhanging. Thanks for the tutorials.

I am assuming that the facings are not cut on the bias. Is that correct?
|
How does facing differ from enveloping a quilt?
|
facings go just around the edges of the back and need to be hand stitched down. They are used in addition to a backing. Enveloping/birthing a quilt covers the entire back with the backing piece and do not need additional bindings or facings.
|
Thanks everyone for your information. I've got some reading to do.
|
That is brilliant for small quilts
|
I would think that using the facing method for larger quilts would be something that would tape your toes in the corners?
