the ten minute block is easy to do and very quick. you can use what ever colours you like and make the squares any size you like. from 4" to 10" or more

neece 11-01-2011 06:23 AM

Disappearing 9 block :?: :?: easy, lots of colors and looks really hard

Triple Rail. Once the strips are pieced and subcut, the blocks are done. Nothing faster!

What about a blue jean quilt?

You can get jeans for almost nothing at yard sales, thrift stores, etc. Better yet ask friends for old jeans.

"quilt as you go"

I agree: disappearing 9-patch and can pick any design that you like after cutting

Mariposa 11-01-2011 01:59 PM

Rail fence, or Yellow Brick Road, or Turning Twenty. :)

wanda lou 11-01-2011 02:07 PM

triple rail is pretty easy.

I think the 10 minute block quilt in shades of browns, blues or greens would be great for a man.

What about the Jelly Roll quilt with the continuous strips? I haven't made it yet but the ones I've seen here on the board are beautiful and I would think it would nice with "manly" fabrics. I'm going to make one in plaids for one of my sons.

Rail fence in guy colors! I made one for my husband with fish for our boat and he loves it.

Where do I find info on the ten minute block?

EmbQuilt 11-01-2011 06:06 PM

Kaye Woods - 6 hour quilt! Easiest I have ever made - long ago my 8 and 11 year old girls made several. All I did was cut and bind.

Murphy 11-01-2011 06:07 PM

I like warm wishes or a BQ pattern. Quick and easy.

EmbQuilt 11-01-2011 06:08 PM

I edited my 6 hour quilt one but it didn't show up. Years ago, my 7 and 11 year olds made several. All I did was cut and bind

EdieClay 11-01-2011 06:46 PM

I agree with Rails. It is quick and easy and looks good.

Maple Island has a quilt called "Hot Shots" it is easy.

Sewlmatesister 11-01-2011 07:31 PM

I agree, the ten minute block!!

cathyvv 11-01-2011 08:24 PM

Does your daughter already know how to sew? If so, then she's likely to do well with any of the suggestions posted. (Note that I personally found the Yellow Brick Road pattern impossible to follow:(, others love it.)

If your daughter doesn't sew, then a big 4 patch is about as basic/easy as you can get. It is a good beginner quilt because it teaches straight line sewing, matching corners, and allows the beginner to get to know the sewing machine without the pressure of having to make a lot of blocks - a quick success that builds confidence. Once the big 4 patch is made, your daughter could decide to make a more complex set of blocks and use the 4 patch as a backing.

Good luck and have fun with your daughter!

lynnsim 11-02-2011 01:05 AM

The disapearring 9 patch is the easiest quilt I've found and it looks difficult.

quiltymom 11-02-2011 03:21 AM

Rail fence or 4 patch

KayT 11-02-2011 03:23 AM

I always like the simple nine-patch as it is. A rail fence is easy. Good Luck and let us know your decision!
