practice practice practice. They have to be fast, it's probably piece work and they make pennies...

yes, and it is images like these that keep them making the $39.00 quilts that you and I could never dream of producing!
It also keeps people from realizing just how much HARD work WE put into a quilt!

I think promoting those sweat shops with guys sitting on little wooden stools all day stooped over like that is sad!

haylillan 06-18-2011 04:58 AM

yep thats how they sew in a factory , machines go like lighting

I've got two of these - one for my overlocker/serger and one for my domestic machine - the only difference is that they are larger on the industrial machines. You should be able to buy them from your sewing machine supplier. Only thing is they are expensive - I paid $75 for mine, but I suppose they are cheaper in the States. Although I know you are joking, they really do make a lot of difference to the speed and the finish is OK.

The finish is just OK??

Go have a look at a quilt in any chain/department store. Thats what the finished product looks like.

I can't believe that people are actually impressed with these videos. I find it discusting that we as a nation are still buying products that are made in these kind of conditions and only because it makes it cheaper on us. freakin amazing!

Jo Belmont 06-18-2011 05:36 AM

As long as consumers buy up this kind of stuff, they'll keep making it. As to whether these are "quilts," per se, I'd call them knock-offs.

The one major component of a quilt which cannot be "knocked-off" is love. There's no love in these.

Now, I'm off to caress my projects.

lfw045 06-18-2011 05:45 AM

Yep .....sweat shop is what I believe we were watching....and no one looked like they were enjoying their work. Although I know that commercial machines work really fast......I still believe these were speeded up a bit.

dash2000lbs 06-18-2011 05:50 AM

I am impressed.... WOW!

rannyof3 06-18-2011 05:51 AM

Could you tell us where you found it? The web site please. All I found was a ruler....

CarolLady 06-18-2011 05:54 AM

amazing!

sewmuchlove 06-18-2011 05:56 AM

Wow is right, but I love the slow, thoughful process of quilting. If I did it this fast, I would have to pay for my therapy. LOL

sewmuchlove 06-18-2011 05:57 AM

Hee, hee.....love your avartar.

Yea, all for the privilege of making a buck an hour. Unfortunately that's big bucks for them.

I have some of these quilts. One of them I absolutely love. It is coming apart at the seams even though the cotton is a very nice quality. Their scant quarter inch is very scant.

That binding thing looks like a bias tape maker attached to the machine at an angle.

Fascinating!   :D :D :D

Productivity is the objective. I would never keep up with the rate seen in the vidios. My sister and niece worked in a clothing factory in Missouri. My niece was fast and very productive, but the pay was minimum rate and no benifets. My sister said they only got a raise when the minimum pay was increased by the government. They had to meet minimum standard production or be fired.

MaggieLou 06-18-2011 06:11 AM

The binding tool looks like one for making double fold bias tape. I think I have one. I'll have to see if I can use it to do binding.

Linda1 06-18-2011 06:13 AM

I used to put zippers in military dress pants in a factory. I had to go fast or not get much money. LOL I quilt sewing at home when I was sewing all day. I still refuse to put in a zipper.

shrabar 06-18-2011 06:13 AM

I want that binder..... I wonder where we could get it .. happy quilting

mpspeedy 06-18-2011 06:16 AM

Now you know how Walmart can sell a quilt in a tote bag for just $20. I can't even begin to purchase the fabric for anywhere near that amount.
As harsh as it seems the workers are probably thrilled to get the work and the pittance they are paid. It all comes down to location, location.

Dkm 06-18-2011 06:20 AM

I think the JOY of quilting wasn't on anyone's face. What a shame.

psthreads 06-18-2011 06:20 AM

Where can we get the binding tool?

And if we as a nation didn't buy them, then what? No factory, No jobs, and likely no dinner for these people.

OK ladies and gents, I found this presser foot attachment on Amazon. It fits a variety of low-shank machines and is only $13.98. I googled it as a bias tape tool. Read the reviews. The first one compares two different types of presser feet and is a quilter.

I ordered that one. There also was another one for quite a bit more money on http://www.allbrands.com

kriscraft99 06-18-2011 06:51 AM

wolph33 06-18-2011 06:52 AM

wow, wish I had that binding attachment

Nolee 06-18-2011 06:53 AM

No "wow" in this for me. Just imagine the satisfaction, joy and calmness they AREN'T getting from what they are doing. I absolutely LOVE putting the quilt together and sitting and relaxing in the shade and putting on the binding by hand. They sure don't look peaceful and also....have you seen the quilts in the stores like Kohls and Target? They are nothing you'd want on your bed or to give away if you are a quilter and know how things SHOULD be done.

I'm a very impatient person but quilting has calmed me down more than anything else I do.

Amythyst02 06-18-2011 06:56 AM

I have ordered several feet from Distinctive and they have all fit my machine, (Kenmore 19233) and worked very well. I do not have this bias tape foot, but..I will be ordering it, after I get my new machine : )

Joan 06-18-2011 06:57 AM

Love the binding video---it certainly made it look easy, didn't it!

fayzer 06-18-2011 06:58 AM

It is called a bias tape attachment. I found this one to fit my Bernina. http://www.berninausa.com/product_de...5-i38-sUS.html

clapperj 06-18-2011 07:01 AM

I worked in a clothing factory for 15 years and yes those machine are fast. You were paid an hourly flat rate and also got paid piece rate. To make money you had to be fast. I wish I had one of those machines now.

Sadiemae 06-18-2011 07:01 AM

This binding tool looks one I had for my serger. It wasn't great, so I will be waiting to hear how people like those they are purchasing.

Gabs 06-18-2011 07:15 AM

I think I'm appaled but strangley intrigued as the same time. Kind of like dejavu and amnesia at the same time. I want the binding tool. (wondering how many words I misspelled) On second thought, who cares.

dollycaswell 06-18-2011 07:24 AM

where did you find the "binding tool" that you ordered? Can you share the link or info about it please? Thanks
