Fat Quarter: how big?

What are the measurements of a fat quarter in inch? I am not so used to it because we are measuring over here with centimeters!

About 18x22. Should always be 18. The other can vary by width of the fabric.

These are created by cutting a half yard of fabric (18") then cutting that piece in half along the fold. So always 18" along the selvedge edge, and around 22 the other way, depending on the width of that particular fabric.

Most of the ones that I have been purchasing recently have been 18x20 and then they shrink when I wash them and they end of being 17ish x 19ish. I do wash all my fabric before I use it. Yes, the new sizing of fabric bolts are causing problems especially when you try to use older patterns and charm squares, some are wonderful and don't shrink and others are already less than 5 inches square before I even think of washing them. Now, I am making my own from my stash of fabric that has already been washed.

Katier825 is right. A fat quarter is 1/2 yard long (36 inches divided by 2 = 18 inches) and then 1/2 the width of the fabric. Most quilting cottons are 42-44inches wide, so the fat quarter will be half of that, or 21-22 inches.
