Fat quarters

I am looking for some suggestions to what I should make. I have several fat quarter bundles I bought and I would like to make quilts for my grandkids this year. If you would like to share pictures of some of the quilts you made using fat quarters I would love to see them and get ideas.

I have 2 that I am using in a few free BOM"s I joined this year. A sampler quilt might be fun too.

twisted turning twenty or disappearing 4 patch? Turning 20 takes 20 FQ, half light, half dark... I twisted mine and mixed up the blocks.

this requires twenty fat quarters and is a classic pattern from years ago - (not sure when) it is really simple to do and there is a companion pattern 'Turning 20 - II'

Crafty has free patterns, just came out with pattern yesterday the would be great with fq or scraos!
Im cutting out fq now for pattern called good fortune- 15 fq! Will post pics when done

I agree with the Turning Twenty pattern books. I believe they are up to book three, I've got books 1 & 2 and all of the patterns are fat quarter friendly.

Do a lookup of "wickedly easy quilts" on www.byannie.com Someone just posted it this week and i can't wait to start one. Various sizes use from 6 to 30 fat quarters....and so pretty. Good luck !

Freckles48 01-31-2014 06:46 AM

Block of the month from Craftsy with lots of background material.

I am currently making a quilt called lucky stars by terry Atkinson. I love this pattern!

Moda bakeshop shop has lots of free patterns and ideas as well

I have several books by M'Liss Rae Hawley that deal with just fat quarters. Most of the patterns need just six or seven with some background fabric and border fabric. She has some terrific ideas. Hope this helps.

carslo 01-31-2014 07:01 AM

This is the one I recommend also!

If you have kiddy prints, an "I spy" quilt would do well. There are several different patterns for I spy. You could us the same idea and have each quilt look different.

Check out the Missouri Star Quilt Co. on Youtube, Jenny uses lots of precuts.

I love the Wickedly Easy Quilt pattern!

Onebyone 01-31-2014 09:34 AM

I use fat quarters just like yardage for any quilt pattern I want to make. I don't see a difference in the two as I cut yardage into smaller sizes to use anyway.

Just made this today. It is a fun, easy way to use those FQs. I've come to dislike FQs since I don't have ways to use most of them.

terri bb 01-31-2014 06:15 PM

these are great ideas! thank you for letting me peek in!

I just finished "Wickedly Easy" up this last week, the pic is still in the camera, will get it posted sometime to day so you can see it. This is a great pattern for fat quarters.

I made a lap quilt using DP9 technique and fat quarters. It worked very well. I used jellyroll strips for binding.

Yellow Brick Road has always been my FQ "go to" and really, many of Terry Atkinson's patterns are FQ friendly

I would do one of the many Turning Twenty patterns……This one included blocks for machine embroidery and was done as a Christmas Theme...

sewmany 02-01-2014 04:09 PM

Great quilts. And they look fast .

wildyard 02-01-2014 06:19 PM

EmiliasNana, Your quilt is simply stunning in those bright beautiful fabrics!! I do like that pattern for FQs, but I like the other suggestions also.
I find myself really loving FQs as I find them very versatile and always easy to use in my quilting plans. It makes me :( that some are finding them hard to use.
If anyone wants to trade FQs for yardage, I might have something that would make you happy. LOL I have a lot of yardage in all kinds of prints and I don't think I will ever have enough FQs.

Have done several Yellow Brick Road quilts.

Suze9395 02-02-2014 08:50 AM

You can make any pattern.
Pick a pattern you like.
Separate your FQs. Either by color, warm/cool, light/medium/dark...or not at all. Consider adding a single back ground color and then just using the FQs through out.

Think log cabin, one half colored one half neutral. Pinwheels all different colors with a neutral background. You could do the ones with triangles or the ones made from rectangles--I did the rectangle one for my DS with white and 30s prints and used a button at the center of each white pinwheel for added interest. It turned out awesome, IMHO!!

SB13 02-02-2014 09:30 AM

I too am a fan of the Yellow Brick Road, for a fast easy, fat quarter friendly pattern! Have made several from baby to full. The fun is also picking the color scheme for this quilt. So many ways to go!

Have you considered a puzzle quilt? I can't recall where I got the pattern, but I think it could be duplicated pretty well. You start with 9 fat quarters stacked on top of each other, and with a new sharp blade, cut the fat quarters at the same time in a pattern you want. Then the pieces are shuffled and sewn back together.

I have made several. Let me look for pictures. Okay, the first quilt is a bit bigger...I may have doubled the pattern. The second uses 9 fat quarters.

That is the best DP9 Patch layout I have ever seen. I like everything to flow in an orderly fashion and most layouts I've seen are to random for my taste.

I have made 6 of the "Wickedly Easy" quilts. I only have a picture of one of them, its made from corduroys mostly salesmans samples of Robert Kaufman fabrics.
I make charity quilts for foster children.
