Fat Quarters
What do you pay for fat quarters at your local quilt shop? Ours are at $3.00 right now. Is that high or low or average?

That’s what most are at my LQS- sometimes they have a 2 for 1 sale which is nice.

Yup, the average price for fabric has gone up a lot and I usually buy lots of fat quarter bundles. Now I really stop, do the math and opt for purchasing 1/2 yards. Our hobby is not cheap!

All the fabric if not on sale at four of the local quilt shops are $10.99 - $11.99 a yard. The fat quarters are $3. I seldom buy fabric from the local shops anymore. I do buy notions and patterns, those are about the same as online and it saves delivery time and most time shipping charges.

Yes, our FQs are about $3.00 each now at the LQS. I buy almost everything online and get wonderful sales.
|
Yes, but if you buy 12 you get on free at my lqs.
|
It's the same price here.
|
Thank you for all of your replies.

We are lucky here.... We have one LQS that is much more reasonable. FQs right now are $2.00, but buy 20 for $20.00. I bought 40 because they will go up I'm sure.
|
3.00 sounds about right to me too. Doing the math you may pay a bit more but sometimes I like to get them rather than yardage so it's worth the extra money to me.
|
About the same in my area also. I do watch for FQ sale at Joann Fabrics. Sometimes I can get them 75 cents each! But I watch for fabric quality.
|
$3.00 for FQ is about right at our LQS too. I really feel it is better to buy a half yard and make your own FQ's. The fabric at our LQS is $11.00 to $13.00 a yard. I now dig in my stash or order on line and get a good deal - or if I really need a certain fabric I go shopping at the sale table that is $5.99 a yard and that is doable. You are right Tallchick-our quilting hobby is NOT cheap but I love it.
|
At my LQS the FQs are $3.50.

I live in an expensive are, 3.25 to 3.50

I never buy fat quarters, only yardage at Walmart or Hobby Lobby. For years I haven't needed any.
|
Our LQS just went up to $4.00. I quit buying them at $3.00.

That's about the going rate. But, Fabric Warehouse here sometimes does a 3 for deal. Why did I buy 3 today? It was in the clearance drawer, It was the right theme and color and I like variety. If they had it on the bolt, I would have bought a half yard of each. I count myself lucky that I found 3 I had to have. I want to make the Happy Flower Quilt in 30's repro prints. So, went specifically for 30's repro prints. It was a steller day. I found plenty to add to the small bundle that I scored at the thrift store a few weeks ago.

Thank you for all of your comments! Some of the fabrics have gone up to $12.59 per yd, and I was considering raising the price on fat quarters at the store. But I will keep it right where it is. Thanks!

As much as I would love to shop at the LQS's, I can't afford it. I have a fabric warehouse locally that sells name brand (Robert Kauffman, Free Spirit, Moda, etc) for $4/yard. Minimum cut is 1/2 yard which is perfect for me. That makes FQ's of designer fabric $1 each. Fits my budget perfectly and I like having the variety.

If I'm buying yardage in quarters they will ask if I want a fat quarter or regular quarter - they are happy to cut FQ and F8 for customers (unless they are having a big sale). I've noticed a lot of quilt shops charge extra for cutting the FQ - I may be spoiled but I won't pay an up-charge for a Fat Quarter. |
I was in a lovely quilt shop yesterday and the FQ's were $3.75 each. Obviously I didn't purchase any but their fabrics are beautiful.
