I've never been any place where the fat quarters are more expensive then yardage, they've always been 1/4 of the price of the metre (in Canada it's by the metre!!).

Our FQs here in town, and at the next closest quilt shop in Canada, are $4.50 a FQ and a metre is $18.

I'm actually surprised to hear there are places where the FQs are priced at higher then 1/4 of the yardage.

Anyway, I prefer to buy FQs...it extends the variety in my stash. If I need to buy yardage for a particular project I will, but if I'm buying just because, it's FQs.

if the four fat quarters are more than the price of the yardage then don't buy it unless you just need a little bit and can only get it in fat quarter. Some shops will cut a fat quarter for you. As if there is one you need still on the bolt. One local shop will do this and the price is the same as the yardage. Then decide if the size of the fat quarter works for you or a 9xwidth of fabric works as well.
Some patterns just don't work for me in fat quarter shape.

If I'm making a quilt and only need a 1/4 of a yard I tell them to make it a fat quarter instead of a 1/4 of a yard so that it is taller and I can make larger cuts

I find it difficult to use fat Squares. I look at a few of ones I have and say to self, well what are you for. :) When I sew a quilt I like the same colors going through. So not I find myself buying more in that area. I still like my scraps and small pieces as I wish to make a string and scrap quilt down the road. Some on here have made some beauties. I also now use the smaller pieces for Purse tissue covers. Guess it's up to each as what we like :) have fun

I typically buy yardage for the siple fact its cheaper and you have enough fabric just in case it gets discontinued by the time you get around to using it!!!

I rarely buy fat quarters unless they are really inexpensive. I prefer yardage myself. I get a min of 1/2 yard if I don't think I will use it for much else. Mostly I buy a yard, if I really like it and it's a good price I get 3 yards and if it's a really really good price I get more!!!!

I do the same thing and buy in meter(39 inches) or 3 meters at a time if I really love the fabric and it is at a reasonable price.

i never get out of the lqs without a couple... kind of like the candy bars right by the register at the market...

one lqs here gives you 1 fat quarter free if you buy 4.. so that makes the price balance out some...
