Fathers day is coming up any ideas?

Jennifer22206 05-20-2011 04:35 PM

My Dad died in 2007. Still don't have the heart to finish the one that I started for him for Fathers Day 2007.

I'd make an assumption that Warm Wishes, Turning Twenty or a D9 or D4 P are quick and easy and good for dads. :D

candykisses31061 05-20-2011 04:46 PM

Im so sorry I just need ideas for my hubby

maryb119 05-20-2011 04:47 PM

My DH and I have a great way to celebrate Mothers day and Fathers day. It started several years ago when he gave me a weed whacker for Mothers day. I thought I could get mad... or get even so for Fathers day, he got an expensive quilting book. We laughed so hard that we do this every year. Last year I got a pipe wrench....(I'd been needing one of those) and he got a bracelet. This year, I got a two step step lader so that when I wash the truck, I can reach the top. (I never wash a vehicle, he does). He will get an embroidery CD from Dacota Collectables with muscle cars from the 60's and 70's on it. It takes all the stress off and we can just enjoy the day.

My DH loves his oversize throw I made for him a few years ago:)

Lucymae 05-20-2011 04:50 PM

How about a scrppy quilt with lots of interesting fabric in it?

Jennifer22206 05-20-2011 04:53 PM

Mary - I love your idea. :D

and no worries. I just cook for my DH on fathers day. :D

kriscraft99 05-20-2011 04:58 PM

I made my hubby a pillow from a shirt of my daughters that he loved on her when she was little. It was a printed t-shirt that had a silly saying on it "boys are icky"... he loved that shirt on her so I put a cotton fabric back on it and stuffed it - he loves that pillow and it is just a throw pillow for our bed :D

If he has some favorite shirts that he has outgrown - you could make him a t-shirt quilt from them.

My Dad has never been much of a sports nut but he does love Alabama Football. I thought I'd make him an Alabama Lap quilt this year.

One year I got a gun for my birthday, another a welder.... I just refused to let hubby use them. Never thought about turning the tables.... I like that idea better

hopetoquilt 05-20-2011 05:55 PM

What are his hobbies? I would start with finding a good fabric that deals with his hobby or favorite team, etc and then build the quilt around that. Have fun!!

I love this! You two have a fabulous sense of humor!

My DH and I have always taken the approach that it's up to our children to celebrate us on Mother's/Father's day. By and large, this has failed. (Without parental leadership, how does a child know what to do?)

Even though we've been married almost 38 years, I just might try to start this tradition with my DH. (Too bad Mother's Day has passed.) I think he'll appreciate the humor as much as I do!

Thanks for a GREAT idea!

I love this. Showed my husband, and he laughed also.

I love it! One year for Christmas my sister got a road atlas, so I've encouraged her to do the same sort of thing for my dear BIL! LOL

Oh, and my Dad's name is Jacob- so I'd go with a Jaocob's Ladder. My Brother is a Jacob, and so is his son- so when my nephew was born I made him a Jacob's Ladder baby quilt. That was 15 years ago now-back when I had no kids of my own and actually had time to hand quilt. How time flies!!

I have bought and made boxer shorts for my DH. He is an avid runner and now has added biking to his list of work outs. I have to find that bicycle fabric and get those boxers done! And yes he really wears them. By-the-By who has time to get a quilt done by Father's day??

[quote=Jennifer22206]My Dad died in 2007. Still don't have the heart to finish the one that I started for him for Fathers Day 2007.quote]

I was working on a quilt for my father-in-law when he passed away. I found great comfort in finishing it and giving it to my brother-in-law (his oldest son) who LOVES it.
My husband and I have taken all Dad's shirts and are in the process of making throw size quilts for the rest of Dad's children. A very healing process. Dad's been gone 2 years and I miss him everyday!

jnagy1206 05-21-2011 07:52 AM

I did a Turning Twenty quilt for my husband. I chose two focus fabrics - money & playing cards - & built around that. For the quilting I carried the theme through and did clubs, hearts, spades & diamonds. It was a lot of fun & he loves it. (I posted pictures in another thread.)

What a wonderful tradition for you two to have started. I wonder if my husband would go for that?

I love your idea..No returns that way....lol

Well, I have some wonderful fishing fabrics and even a pattern that I want to use for a quilt for my honey, but.... other quilts keep getting in the way. He really deserves his own. He supports my quilting 100%. I think I need to get started, soon. But, I won't make it by Father's Day.

Your Dad is a very smart man LOL

Brand new sewing machines for all of husbands!!!

My daughter asked me to make a "Crown Royal" blanket for her father-in-law's 70th birthday in January. He enjoys a drink of this. My daughter bought some purple Crown Royal bags off eBay (about 20 of them). They come in 3 sizes. A quickie is to buy 1-1/2 yards of gold fleece and 1-1/2 yds of royal purple fleece. I cut the embroidered Crown Royal wording from the bags and stitched them inbetween the two layers with a border of them around the perimeter and more in an oval in the center with a big one in the middle and cut out for a peek-a-boo for each one. The gold fleece is on top. I finished the edge with black fleece 2-1/2" border. He loved his "manly" blanket and it is very warm during our cold Michigan winters.

I love this idea!!! One year I got a new compressor for Mother's Day. Of course, I keep it in the garage where it's easy for my DH to use whenever he needs it. ROFLOL

nancia 05-21-2011 04:50 PM

my dh gave me a fire pit for mother's day, so i thought i would give him a couple of chairs and extendable marshmallow sticks--yum!

vwquilting 05-21-2011 06:33 PM

Make him an ond fashion Situpon. Makea square block 18x18 sew a 3"saching between the layes fill it with scraps. He can take it anywhere and sit in it. If he is a fisherman, hunter use waterproof fabric on one side.

You can put a zipper on one side to fill with things. put a quilt inside for a shoulder cover up and always put his special treat in it and a love note.

Add a handel or shoulder strap. He will love it.

wildyard 05-21-2011 06:51 PM

Our take on either parent's day is, "you are not my Mother/Father". LOL

LOL. I read this to my husband. Great idea...we just might have to 'borrow' that!

nancia 05-21-2011 07:38 PM

back to father's day quilts for a minute, i started a quilt for my dh in his favorite color, blue. i asked him how he liked it, but he had no clue it was for him. when he said it was ok, i could just hear his thought " for someone else". so the man i've been living with for 35 yrs and 3 children, hundreds of pets, etc, i evidently don't know at all! i find that very annoying. he'll be lucky if i ever get him anything.
apparently, we're strangers.

My husband loves dogs, so I am making a throw for him with squares of dog prints on it and dog paws on the other squares. The backing will just be plain solid color.
