Hello all... Our church is having a ladies brunch this Saturday, October 8, and I just found out our class is responsible for decorating a table (large round, seats 8-10)... that is not the problem. I'll use a quilt top I have ready to quilt and put some quilting "stuff" around with buttons and tape measures and such. But it just occurred to me it would be great to leave a small favor at each setting. I thought about a simple pin cushion, but I'm not very original (don't think outside the box... sigh)

Help... I need ideas???? and it needs to be simple.. quick... inexpensive...

A small dollar store dish, bowl, cup...filled with candy/nuts, etc. Small mug rug or coasters in fall colors.

Or use the "mug rug/coaster" as a little candle mat with small candle.

First of all get a piece of clear tablecloth plastic to put over your quilt top. I would be kind of nervous sitting at a table with a quilt top drinking my tea or coffee. The little "sewn pumpkin pincushion" from the www2.fiskars.com are really cute. The maple leaf mug rugs from the tutorial section are nice.

I like the seam ripper idea. Can never have too many seam rippers.

These little thumbcushions are the handiest ones I own and they're super fast to make - I have one at each sewing machine, just because they're so practical.

Since the pincushion is right near the presser foot, you don't even have to take your eyes off of your work. Just pull the pin and stick it into the pincushion, parallel to your thumb. I've never stuck myself once, and I'm a complete klutz.

I don't cut a slit in the bottom for stuffing the way the tutorial shows - I stuff right through the hole that you leave when you sew the square into a triangle. Those are two fewer steps. I cut batting into 1/2" wide strips and push them inside with hemostats.

You can fancy them up with bows or flower appliques and stick a few pearl pins in them. Super fast and easy to make.

We did this at our church. We used a quilt for the table cloth and used an antique sewing machine for the center piece even put a small quilt in progress under the machine foot. The favors we used focused on the theme and we picked them up at the dollar store. Our table received alot of comments. Also, the quilt will wash if something is spilled. Enjoy!!!
