Favorite Batting
What is your favorite batting to use for a lap quilt. I am making it for my grandmother to throw over her legs
100% Bamboo of you can find it and then afford it or i usually get a 50% Bamboo and 50% cotton mix its very soft and doesn't shrink much either .
I like warm and white because I use a lot of white and neutral fabrics and need a white batting. It is thin, even without thin spots or holes and holds up great after washings. It is the same as warm and natural which is jus in a little darker shade.
I am a fan of Warm and Natural or Warm and White... partially because it will hold up to preshrinking better than other cotton battings. You may want to consider a poly batting as they are warmer and lighter weight.
I prefer Hobbs 80/20 because it is lighter than W&N, has a softer feel and has a bit of puffiness.

I'm a Hobbs 80/20 most of the time. But on my DH quilt, I actually used the Hobbs black batting and it feels so much heavier and thicker. He loves it.
Hobbs wool. It's lightweight, breathable and easy to machine or hand quilt. Unless your grandmother has a wool allergy, you can't go wrong with this fiber.
I use W&N because I bought a roll of it. That said, I realy like the drape of Quilters Dream. Also want to try a silk batting but that would be for something really special due to $$. I did a lap quilt for my grandmother a number of years ago with 2 layers of W&N cuz Iwanted it to be warm for her. Hand qiulted that puppy as well. It came home to me after she passed away. I will say, after several washingsnit has held up well and not stiff at all. Also was not stiff when gifted.

Quilter's Dream. Dream Orient has lovely drape and light weight. It has silk, bamboo, eucalyptus and cotton. Has to be felt to be believed.
Hobbs wool and Tuscany Silk are my favorite for lap quilts. The drape and softness of those are perfect.

I love Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 and I use it all the time for my lap quilts. I like it because it's so easy to work with when I sandwich.
I'm a cotton or cotton/bamboo girl myself, but I used Quilter's Dream Puff - seen here - for a lap quilt for MIL who is in a care home. It's super-light and has a decent loft and I knew it would be washed a lot. I also like the Dream Puff for Trapunto :)
I prefer Hobbs 80/20 and their wool for warmer climates. I just placed an order with Connecting Threads as the battings are 30% off, they have a new bleached 80/20 that I am going to try out.
I prefer all the Quilter's Dream products. I have used their cotton and wool the most but do like their other types too.
Warm and Natural or Warm and White. I haven't tried to many others though.
I like hobbs 80/20 and get it on the roll/ yardage at Joann's. When I've gotten it in a package it's so wrinkly...
where do you find the bamboo stella63?
I'm in England, but I will tell u anyway its called quilt direct . I got a bolt of 50/50 20 yards for £166 . Don't know if they'll post to USA or of u have to pay very high import taxes like we do. Best of luck .
I prefer Winline's Comfort Blend. It's an 80/20 (cotton/poly) that is a bit nicer than the Hobbs 80/20. It's $1 more per yard than Hobbs, but less expensive than Warm and Natural.
I like Warm and Natural. I have used other and like them too but W and N fits my budget and seems to be doing the trick for all of my quilts.
Quilter's Dream is my choice.
I'm a fan of Hobbs 80/20 just because it works with most everything I do. If it is wrinkly, I pop it in the dryer for a few minutes on low with a damp washcloth.....wrinkles always disappear.

Wal-Mart online has 3 sizes of bamboo, 60 x 60 is 18.99

My favorite it the Hobbs 80/20.
Hobbs 80/20 and because it's made here in Texas with Texas grown cotton.
I usually use Warm & Natural, as I like the weight of a lap quilt, or any quilt with that batting. Although you might try a poly batting that would be very light.
I love Hobbs 80/20. Right now Connecting threads has it on sale for $13.99 for a queen size. Other sizes are available also.
How is the Tuscany Silk? I nearly bought it at JoAnn's with my 60% coupon but put it back when I saw "hand wash".
My quilts have to be machine washed because of cats & dog. Has anyone machine washed this? How did it turn out? Thank you |
