Favorite Quilt Magazine?
I'm thinking to ask my family for a quilt magazine subscription for Mother's Day. What are your favorites?
I gave up subscribing, so many of the good ones have died. 😞 Quilter's Newsletter and Machine Quilting Unlimited were my favorites. There are a couple of nice Australian magazines, but they can be expensive and/or hard to find, Australian Patchwork and Quilting is one. I also like Quilt Mania, but that's more eye candy and less how-to.
Today’s quilter
I like BH&G's American Patchwork & Quilting as well as Quilting Arts. Browse the ones in the grocery store and see which seems to meet your needs.
A very gift-worthy quilting magazine is QuiltFolk. Happens to be my favorite (and only) magazine subscription.
American Quilter. It comes with a membership in AQS.
Quiltfolk is my absolute favorite. A little pricey but great articles, quilt history, armchair road trip. No ads, quality paper and printing. Comes wrapped in plastic inside a cardboard envelope. I look forward to this every quarter. A keepsake of story books highlighting regional quilts and quilt makers.

Do you like Crazy Quilts, Kristi? I love the print to order "Crazy Quilt Quarterly". The first of the year, Winter 2021, isn't out yet but all of the previous ones are available for printing. https://www.magcloud.com/user/kitty-and-me. (I am not affiliated with this... I just drool over the images and try to crazy quilt after getting inspired by them).
Missouri Star Quilt Company's Block magazine. No ads, beautiful pictures, quilting related anecdotes.
It really depends what your preferences are. Good idea, to check some out at the library.
I've at various times subscribed to Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting, BH&G American Patchwork & Quilting, Quiltmania, and Today's Quilter. Of those, American Patchwork & Quilting had the most patterns I was interested in. When I began quilting I wasn't sure of my direction, but I am definitely now more interested in traditional than modern quilting, and they had the most of what I would call 'traditional' patterns, although one of the Fons & Porter ladies features a traditional quilt in each issue. |
British mags, Aussie ones and French magazines for quilting are great. I used to get them all. some sent to me from friends. still have a tad of each. try a magazine out and see if it fits what you want to do in quilting. Good luck.

I like American Patchwork and Quilting as well as Primitive Quilts and Projects.
I haven’t bought a quilt magazine since they stopped publishing Quilters Newsletter Magazine.
I used to buy Quick Quilts at the newsstand. Not sure if it’s still being published or not. Their quilts were uncomplicated which was good for me.
Thank You!
You all are a fountain of information! Many of the magazines I have not heard of, so I will be looking them up. This will be a fun research project! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

Me too. That was a wonderful mag.

You might want to see if your library has quilt magazines in digital form and use that money for more fabric 😆

I looked at the price of Love of Quilting in the store a month ago and it was $9.99, I about fainted. Hard to believe anyone pays that, a subscription of any magazine is the way to go. But I no longer subscribe since there may be only 1 pattern in any one magazine that I might use.
In the past, I’ve had subscriptions to Quilters Newsletter, American Patchwork and Quilting, Quiltworks, American Quilters Society and a few more. After a bunch of years I feel like I’ve read enough? Idk. I looked at Quiltmania and decided to take it for a year. I also decided to take the Quilters Companion. Online. It’s outrageous to ship the magazine from Australia but the online version isn’t too bad. Love them both.

Honest and true answer, if you search you can find it again: I cancelled my remaining magazine subscription after my first year on the Board because I get more out of what the members here are doing. People are exploring/defining their areas of the art right here and posting pictures and talking the issues. All without the ads and added buying temptations!
Sometimes it is nice though, just to get something bright and fun in the mail. Nothing wrong with that. My "last" subscription was American Patchwork and Quilting. I do look at the AQS stuff each month at my Tuesday group. Not at all the same, but I usually catch at least some of the 2 hours or so of Quilt programming my local PBS station airs each week! So I get to see the Fons and Porter season, even if not as quickly as published. |
I loved the quilt mag "Quilt" I have kept everyone I got...till they quit making them...loved the old patterns, and I look thru them quite frequently.... don't buy anyone elses...too many ads!
I second Quilt Folk and Block Magazine. I believe there are only 6 issues of Block per year but each one includes numerous MSQC patterns.
I like "The Block" from Missouri Star Quilt Co. It is informative, they print corrections when necessary and let you know it. Also, You can buy a box to store them in so you keep them like books.

My favorite, Quilts with Style/Foundation Piecer, stopped publishing some years ago. It got too big for a mom-and-pop operation, but not big enough to hire a staff. I think Quiltmaker may still be in business, but I dropped that one too when a new publisher took it over. They took out all the features that I liked best and started to publish a magazine like all the rest of their line. There used to be 2 or 3 per issue that I wanted to make; after 4 or 5 magazines with nothing but bland traditional patterns in ugly fabrics, I let it lapse. |
I love the block mag by MSQC!
I recently went through a stack of magazines that I had marked pages for patterns I want to make. I'd keep those and donate the rest. However, it seems that out of 35 magazines, I would only donate 4 LOL, I found more patterns I can now make since I have a bit more "experience".
Don't subscribe to any anymore. Just check them out at the local library or go on line to find things.
I don't buy quilting magazines any longer....I find Pinterest much more useful!
I also get a LOT of inspiration from quilting blog posts, particularly when they describe their creative process. |
