Favorite Scrap pattern
What is your favorite scrap pattern when you really want to use up some fabric?
|
Favorite scrap pattern??? Gee, there are soooo many. When I think of scrap quilts, I usually go to Bonnie Hunters site ~ quiltville.com . Sometimes it depends upon the 'mood' I'm in, as to the pattern I pick. Or other times, what scraps really need to be 'used' up. Like just the other day I finished a baby quilt using brights.

Disappearing 9 patch is one of my favorites.

Check out this thread.....lots of inspiration:) Scrap quilts are my favorite! |
There are so many scrap pattern that I love. But if you want to use up a lot of fabrics, how about log cabin?
|
I like scrappy stars, any stars. Multicolored on a pale background.
|
they are all fun but if you really want to burn through fabric whatever pattern you use, use no bigger than 2" units. The more blocks the more fabric gone because of that 1/2 seam allowance in every block. This will use up about 15 yards of fabric. Makes a heavier quilt, but more cosy to sleep under :)
The last border I put on had more than 5000 pieces, all one inch finished. It's gorgeous! |
I am currently intrigued with the many design opportunities of the Split 9 Patch free pattern from http://www.quiltville.blogspot.ca Click on the free pattern tab at the top of the site.

When ever I just you into paralysis as there are too many choices.. I make log cabins from my scraps... and use logs that are 1 1/2 ( cut) or smaller that way it uses the most amount of even the smallest scraps.... as the center will be 1 1/2 inch by 1 1/2 inch and so will the second unit added.

My favorite is "Scrappy trips" by BOnnie Hunter at quiltville.com. I am making one right now.
|
My next scrap quilt will be Snake River.
|
I like simple patterns like log cabin, crazy quilt or strips.
|
Arkansas Crossroads, love this pattern for scrappy!
|
When I am in the mood and want to get rid scraps I do crazy squares. You can use up a lot of scraps on one square.
They are always so pretty. |
I love to make crumb quilts with scraps.

Guess it depends on what "look" you want.
There's scrappy and then there's scrappy. Here's one I made.. |
I like to do courthouse steps. If you have enough similar fabrics to do all of the centers, it gives a very cohesive look.
|
For me it would be string blocks.
|
I like to do strip blocks if I have strips. I also like the "scrappy trip around the world" squares.
|
I am almost finished with a crumb quilt. Started in the middle of the block with a five sided piece not bigger than inch, added "anything" around that, pressed, trimmed, added more, etc. until I had a nine inch square. That all went together with black sashing, and looks quite stunning.

I am into making a postage stamp quilt - amazing how much fabric that takes!

So many to choose from.
|
I paper piece 4 and 5" log cabins, sometimes sort of color controlled, sometimes not, whatever I feel like at the moment. Occasionally a few 6-7", whatever, to combine into larger panels for borders, bags, runners etc
|
I have a difficult time making scrap quilts. I always am trying to "match" and get too worried about how it's going to turn out. Usually way to stressful, so I stay away from them.
|
Another vote here for the scrappy trip around the world!
ubequilting That's a beauty I'd like to try someday. Great quilt! |

Most of my quilts are scrappy and I usually plan 3 or 4 patterns and start stashing scraps for them. Right now I'm collecting 1 1/2 in strips for two different Log Cabins (one bright, one not); 7" and 3 1/2" squares for snowballs; 5" squares for whatever "charm" pattern strikes my fancy. Of course, I also have strips for strip-pieced blocks which always use up a lot of fabric. I agree that 2" squares use up a lot of scraps. I just posted a scrappy Many Trips Around the World which is one of my favorites. Also just posted a scrappy X's and O's that uses a lot of 5" squares.
I also like this one...I used a pattern called Dazzling Scraps from an issue of Quilt magazine a couple of years ago (designed by Paula Barnes). I've seen similar patterns elsewhere. It used a ton of scraps. This photo shows it on my king-size bed and I'll be adding at least 2 more scrappy borders to make it big enough. (Sorry the pic is so big!) Anita |

I made this quilt entirely from scraps, although I nearly had to break down and buy some lights (I tend to collect dark fabrics).
Here's a link for the pattern. http://www.quilterscache.com/D/DepressionBlock.html Please note: The diamonds show up WAY better and far more pleasing if on a bed that has northern or eastern light. I honestly wasn't too pleased with it until I put it on my mother's bed. She loves it. It is a thick quilt that is tied (wool ties). A lot depends on what your collection of fabric contains. I have an entire box of fat quarters consisting of novelty fabrics. I'm trying to decide on a quilt pattern that will use these well, yet USE UP the fabric! In other words, I only need to buy a small amount of background fabric. Another suggestion is a log cabin. Consider using templates if you are using up a lot of odd sized pieces. Otherwise, 2 inch or 2.5 inch strips can either be precut or sewn in strips a la Eleanor Burns' method. |
All the scrappy quilts posted here are wonderful and it shows how a SQ can be very organized or very care free and all look great.
You are all marvelous:D! |
Yikes.. depends on the sizes your working with...
Strips - wonky log cabins and strip quilts Sqs- theres soooo many patterns.. bits and pieces- crumb quilt... |
I just started to quilt using scrap and made a couple of postage stamp star quilts. It takes 32 separate fabrics for the inside block and they are 1 1/2 inch each. That used up a lot of my smaller pieces and I have a shoe box full of squares for the next time.
