I'vev been using Gutterman's thread for years now but the lint has gotten out of control!

Anyone have any feedback on other types of threads and the lint factor?

thanks

fabricluvr 11-14-2008 04:17 PM

i never used gutterman, but other threads have been a lint problem. i really like the threads from connectingthreads.com. and they are very reasonable and lint much less, if any.

Mettler thread is good, I use it and Gutterman and I also use the Essential Thread from Connecting threads, though I do get more lint with the Essential threads than with the Mettler. I just clean out my bobbin area each time I change the bobbin.

The woman I just bought my new machine from said cotton thread is too liny for machines. So, I bought polyester. BUT, a dear friend gave me a gift today--and it's 3 large spools of C +C cotton machine quilting thread. :D  They didn't have polyester in big spools--just teeny ones. So...I'm going to use it and just hope cleaning the bobbin area helps. :?:

I found that when I switched from Coates & Clarks to essentials from connecting threads I have very little lint...never tried mettler...

quiltwoman 11-15-2008 04:10 AM

I have been using a thread called The Bottom Line from Superior Threads for my bobbin thread. I have also used it to hand applique.

What about 33cent thread at High school pharmecy? Is that alright to use?

My experience with my sewing machines...

Mettler - the first thread I used in my first sewing machine. I had all sorts of trouble until the thread was used up and my problems went away. Perhaps it was me, perhaps it wasn't no way to tell, but I don't really want to bother finding out.

Gutterman I tried next. It's not color safe, it will run like a streaker at a NFL game. I don't like it, but in a pinch I will buy the one made for quilting (and cringe everytime I have to pull it out to use), never again will I touch the all purpose.

Coats and Clark I had some on hand and used it because I needed that color and man oh man the lint was so bad it completely filled the bottom of the sewing machine in less that one bobbin's worth of sewing, it was so bad DH told me never to use it in the ULT again.

Sulky I tried next. It's good because it's colorfast :) but the Rayon is all I can get locally and it's not very strong. I have some, I buy it when I need it faster than my online thread place can get it to me. (which is amazingly fast)

Next I tried Maderia, this I love. I started with the sampler kits Joann's sells for $20, and I just love the stuff. I am in the process of switching from the Maderia Rayons to Maderia Polyneons, amazing smooth silky strong stuff.

Somewhere along the lines I found Aurifil for quilting and piecing. That stuff is just wonderful. It's two threads woven together instead of the typical three so there's lots and lots of thread on a spool. It costs a bit more but my sewing machines love it, hardly any lint, even when quilting lots and lots it sews beautifully.

I was so sick of buying and trying threads (and running out of those tiny spools) I bought two Cones of Maxi-Lock. This is Polyester thread and it sews like a charm. Nice and strong, no shine. The thread looks a bit fuzzy like it should lint up, but it doesn't, just a little wisp with the lint brush between bobbin changes and your good to go. This stuff is cheap, you can find it at Joanns, and a cone lasts quite a long time, so if you can find a way to use the cone on your machine don't hesitate. :)

Hope I helped.

Whatever works in your machine and makes you happy. I have two all around favorites, for cotton connecting threads for poly Joanns big 1.99 cones . No major problems so I'll stick to these :D

A tip on thread do not use cheap thread escpecially for quilting. A quilt that will be used and washed often needs sturdier thread. I have used Coats and clarks since I started sewing it works for me.

Thanks! this is all great information. I live in a small town, finding thread is an adventure unless you want Coats & Clark or Gutterman or Mettler. I'd searched on-line but wanted some first hand feedback!

Cathe 11-16-2008 05:50 AM

The regular Coats and Clark works fine. Most of the time, for everything, I use the big C&C cardboard tubes of #50 mercerized cotton. It's so smooth and pleasant to work with.

i love the king tut thread and they really are beautiful, but WOWare they expensive. you get what you pay for.

kanoelani 11-18-2008 04:45 PM

I use Superior Threads; Masterpiece for piecing and King Tut for quilting. I love them!

sewmuch 11-18-2008 04:59 PM

Connecting threads here, no problems, good prices.

I have been thinking about getting thread from connectionthreads. Glad to see someone who has used them.

I just love the Essential Thread from Connecting Thread. I think I have most of what they have now and it's well worth it. Very little lint and I just blow it away and it doesn't seem to collect inside the machine or the bobbin. I haven't tried it in my new Viking Sapphire though.

OK You talked me into it. I just ordered the sets they have from connectionthreads. I can't wait to get them. I have been debating for quilt a while about buying them. Can't wait til they get here. The colors look wonderful. Oh, and the price is great.

rismstress 12-27-2008 03:09 AM

What does everyone use for hand quilting? It's hard to find the correct weight and even if it's unwaxed and I wax it, some of it splits. I would like suggestions and where do you get it?

Here's my 2cents:

I say away from C&C I found that lint to be terrible!

I use alot of Essentials from Connecting Threads (still linty but not too bad) ALL colors & good prices)

I tried some Presencia 60wt. for piecing. I'm not sure if the price is justified yet.

I'm going to get some Superior/Auriful threads soon.

As for hand applique (which I love!) I get the silk 100 wt. thread. You really only need a few basic colors for everything & when you use it the stitches are invisible!!

Please stay away from 5/$1.00 thread!! They will ruin your machine!! The only thing they are good for is to hand baste something because you know you will rip the stitches out.

Hope this helps!

pocoellie 12-27-2008 05:57 AM

Quilter101-My 2 cents worth -save your money. You're better off getting older thread at a estate sale or auction. The Essential Threads from Connecting Threads is very reasonable and it's a lot of thread for the price.

littlehud 12-27-2008 04:31 PM

I bought the thread sets from Connecting Threads. They are 20%off. Shared them with my son. I really love them. Works out to $1.59 a BIG spool. 1200 yards. That's alot of good quality thread. Won't be using C&C anymore.

sewnsewer2 12-27-2008 04:34 PM

I use coats and clark for piecing but use mettler to quilt with.
