Favorite way to accurately mark dark fabrics
When I have tried the lighter pencils I have had to push so hard that the fabric was getting distorted! Anything that works and kind of glides smoothly? Preferably that can be easily found. Asking for the moon:thumbup:

I like the powder white chalk wheel. DON"T EVER use the yellow, blue or red. Doesn't come off the quilts. I used it on all my quilts that were in competition in the late 90s.

White school chalk sharpened to a point with a hand held pencil sharpener, soap, White ceramic mechanical pencil, Roxanne's white water soluble pencil. As with any tool you must test on your specific fabric to ensure it comes out ok. also make sure any tool you use is wax free.
Edited to add I also like to use pounce pad when using stencils. I use the regular chalk refill not the kind you have to remove with heat or steam. But the regular does brush off really easy so might not stay put as long as you need it. I have never tried the pounce ultimate (the kind you have to remove with steam or heat) |
The white Chaco Liner is very nice and is just chalk so it brushes off easily.

My favourite method for marking dark fabrics I have posted before but I will post again. Buy WHITE school chalk and a make up pencil sharpening or a large school sharpener. Carefully sharpen the chalk until get get a nice point. Easy, inexpensive and if you mark the fabric lightly, it can be brushed away.. Never use coloured chalk to mark a quilt top as it is impossible to remove.

i use slivers of soap

White Chaco Liner for me, too. Never had luck with white "pencils" of any kind and only use liquid soap! As others have said - ONLY white.
ps: I blow on the line it makes to get rid of the extra chalk. Line is still nicely visible. |
I us3 chalk. I have chalk wheels in various colors, a chalk pencil that comes with various colors and pounce powder

This! I use it all the time for my longarm. No pushing no crumbling and tons of refills come with the package and a sharpener. About $8 now.

I too save the small slivers of soap to mark my quilts. Easy to clean off + the quilt smells good.
