Happiness is... 09-24-2011 09:09 AM

I'm not going to get that machine. TOO much!!! I'm not particularly looking for a featherweight. Just had heard a lot about them - everyone seems to think they are "the thing" to have!!! All I really want is a reliable, lightweight portable to take to classes and Guild.

I have a Singer Featherweight. I paid top dollar for it, at $525.00, two years ago. I bought it to carry back and forth to quilting classes. At first I loved it, but in the long run, it sewed too slow and the bobbin didn't hold much thread. Every one in the class would be ahead of me in their sewing. So, I say "No". don't buy one. I eventually settled on a used Janome to take to class. At home I sew on my Bernina, which I love. However, the Janome is a great machine as well and sews fast.

I paid $375 for mine, which included $25 shipping. Very satisfied and was sold by a board member. Beautiful little girl!

I paid $500 for my featherweight the Spring of 2005. It had been completely re-conditioned, checked over thoroughly, and gives a perfect stitch. I felt like I was paying "top dollar," but there weren't many selling then. I love it,it gives good service, and I haven't had any major problems with it.
It was made in 1942, and could look up the exact numbers on it.
I would rather pay more and have it in perfect condition than to pay less and have to start having work done on it.

If you want lightweight and reliable, Janome makes a small machine that is good. Sears Kenmore labels the same machine as a "mini ultra" and the price is under $100. It has several different stitches and the reviews of users are very positive.

someone needs to check your foot pedal. there are reasons
when they run slow.

I bought a 1951 160th Anniversary Featherweight on Ebay for $375.00 plus $35.00 shipping, so it came to a little over $400.00. It was in excellent condition. I bought it because it is so cute. My Designer SE sews a lot faster, has many more stitches, etc. I bought the Featherweight because of its history and it so doggone cute. I'm not sorry I paid that much for it as it does sew beautifully and I use it when I want nostalgia. Also, it is so portable for taking to classes.

You should be able to find something less expensive. These machines are little workhorses. If they break you can usually fix them yourself, there is a workbook that tells you haow to take them apart.

MissJMac 09-24-2011 11:07 PM

No way, keep looking - they show up all the time in all price ranges. You can probably find one for under $100 and even if you have to pay $40-50 to have it serviced, you're in good shape. I paid $45.00 at a garage sale and $40. to have it cleaned and serviced

Also the wires that wrap the motor may need cleaning. Between myself and my daughter we have three of them. Two of them run like lightening. The third runs slower even with the pedal to the metal. I was told that it may need to have the armature cleaned or possibly a new motor. If it is running correctly it runs just as fast as any other machine I have. Ann in TN

I have 3 featherweights. One was 350.00, the other was 220.00 and one was 190.00. The last turned out to be a cintennial edition, I was told when I had it serviced. Love to sew on them,my husband doesn't understand since I have a wonderful Bernina. They are great to take in the camper.

I paid $425 for my FW about 15 yo. I have just recently started using it regularly. I do all my piecing on it and less than a year ago I bought the Janome 6600. Still turn to the FW.

Don't worry... when you find her, it will be worth the wait.

countrycottage 09-26-2011 06:34 AM

Saw 3 Featherweights in an antique store in Arkansas last week. They ranged from $425 to $525. The $525 machine was in excellent condition, no scratches, decals perfect, case not scratched. The other two had obviously been used more and showed some wear. Seemed high to me.

Joselake 09-26-2011 08:59 AM

I think that is a litte too high. I just bought one on ebay last week 1941, for $192.00. She has a few attachments and a footpetal and case. I didn't need the button holer and some of the other attachments , just wanted her for straight stitching.
Keep looking, she will come when it's meant to be.

susanjean 09-26-2011 02:13 PM

Wow, I didn't know that. Thanks, I'll have the foot pedal checked out. Thanks again, really appreciate it.

Lone Feather 09-26-2011 04:39 PM

well, i have a feather weight and i love it...i paid $300 for mine and would give $400 if it is worth it....look at the gold designs and if they are still in great shape the machine probably is too....I also have a singer treadle, 3 drawers, a white, treadle 2 drawers, and 3 other old singers. then i have an 1130 bernina and a 220 bernina. my hubby says why the heck would anyone want that many machines.....silly man......hahahaha ;-) as far as a sears machine, I guess i would really check it out good before getting it...good luch my sewer friend....

Lone Feather 09-26-2011 04:40 PM

Lone Feather 09-26-2011 04:44 PM

terri, go to sew its for sale on the web. great place to purchase machines of many kinds. I bought my 1130 benina there for $600, wow what a machine. i love it.....but still would never give up my feather weight....love sewing with it.....speed has nothing to do with it....the stitches are perfect with one. I have many friends who say the same thing about their feather weights.....they love them.....

reginalovesfabric 09-27-2011 05:15 AM

I have two featherweights, one was $224 and the other $149 I think this is too high

tenngal 09-28-2011 02:09 PM

I have bought several from Goodwill.com - never paid over $250 and they just needed a little elbow grease

suern3 09-28-2011 02:20 PM

It really depends on what it is worth to you. I recently bought one on eBay and paid over $500. It was worth it to me because it did not need work or cleaning, it has accessories, original manual, extra manuals, great case and fun for me, made in my birth year plus a beautiful scroll plate. I learned from the 99 that I bought on CL that i'm not want to do tinkering, cleaning and searching for parts:) As in everything, to each his own! And good luck in your search.

dianalee 09-29-2011 07:04 AM

I have a 301 so I know about them. Yesterday I saw one in a local antique store for $375.00 firm. I couldn't believe it! I stumbled on mine for $125.00 with a beautiful Maple cabinet. And mine is soooo much nicer! And it had all the attachments and even the book. Just keep looking! Just don't settle on one that you have to save from the dumpster. There are a lot of pristine featherweights, (mine was) and others out there! I once had a sewing machine 35 years ago that sewed for 1 day and had to take 3 days off! What a drama queen, diva it was!

1screech 09-29-2011 07:08 PM

I love my FWs. I have paid $275 to 400 for all of mine. The price must vary by geographical location. I do think if it works good and has the manual, case, attachments and not rusty, it is worth $300 to $400. Just my opinion. I love my girls.
