I ran into a lady also known as Nancy Jefferson who has feed sack material. I did not know until she told me that the feed was shipped with the inside out. She also had some really neat kits, I abought a blue wedgewood Lancaster Rose to make for our anniversary. I am planning on going back and getting some of the feed sacks for a memory quilt.

countrycousin 10-13-2011 10:33 AM

I would say at least a yard in length and two feet in width.

It would depend on the size of the bag for the item it held. Although all are called feed sack fabric, there were sacks for flour, sugar, seeds along with other items.

You can tell if you get the whole piece if it is still intact or you can see where the seam was sewn. Often the fabric is sold in pieces and parts.

I remember those bags well. Does that make me older than dirt? I would love some of those just for memories sake. How can I get in touch with Nancy Jefferson? My father used to get chicken feed in those bags. My Mother and Grandmother made all sorts of treasures out of them including dresses for me since I was the only girl in the family for awhile.

What are some suggestions for limiting the amount of fraying one gets when prewashing materials?

I was at an auction and no one was bidding on this box that had some yarn laying on the top so I finally bid a dollar imagine my surprise when I got it home it was full of feed sacks I had never seen before that are going on ebay for $30 each

What works best for me is to wash the fabric in a lingerie bag on delicate cycle. I rarely get any fraying at all that way.

The particular feed sacks came from a store owner in Phenix, Virginia. I will get Nancy's Phone Number and address for you. She opens her store on Weds. and Sat. It is the Village Antiques in Charlotte Court House, Va.

I do not have the capability to do pictures as of yet. I am on the library computer.
