VERY nice!

Well at least I know I'm not totally crazy! I researched my older Kenmore online and found out that it has the super-high shank foot. The needle is positioned to the left of the center of foot. The only way you can get it center is put it on zig zag stitch.
Wow...and I just love this machine! Haven't sewn on it much since I got it recently at Salvation Army.
You can get an attachment online to be able to use low shank foot, but I still don't think it would align the needle center like I want it to.
Oh well, it's either back to my trusty old Singer, or learn to look only at the needle and not be distracted by the center of the foot. Not impossible, but an adjustment mentally for me :)

Very pretty block, things get easier and better the more often you perform this action. It does require a different way of thinking, sometimes overthinking the proces. Great first block.

mucky 09-09-2011 05:43 AM

you ought to be able to move the needle to another position

Fantastic block. Wish my work looked that good. You go girl! Happy Quilting.

(sorry, in reply to a question above)

I use an open-toed foot and always leave the paper on until done.

One tip -- to align the seams, use a pin at the point and follow through to the other point on the other piece -- does that make sense?

Same tip when matching points when quilting. Maybe someone else can explain it better.

Don't sweat the small stuff. It is really good.

Great block.....my first ones were not perfect, don't give up. Love your fabrics :)

grammysharon 09-09-2011 07:19 AM

PP still takes precision to put all the pieces together. You are doing a great job!!!

blondeslave 09-09-2011 09:32 AM

Gorgeous colors!

amizjeanne 09-09-2011 10:55 AM

Love this pattern and your colors. Do not give up on this method.

KSue 09-09-2011 10:55 AM

This quilt is going to be gorgeous when you are finished. I just love the colors you selected. I also love the pattern. Please post where we can find it. Thank you. And it does get easier.

The pattern is a Carol Doak free one and can be found here. It is the 700 member celebration block.

Very nice! I love your fabric choices.

CAS49OR 09-09-2011 11:21 AM

Beautiful pattern and nice color choice! I suggest leaving the paper in (as many others have). Is there a setting on your machine which you might have changed. I'm a beginning sewist and have accidentaly moved the needle to the left or right when I thought I was changing stitch length.

My Avatar is PP work. My biggest issue was waiting to trim the fabric until after I had folded over and pressed it. Trim it ahead of time and the fabric will not cover the next space. OOPS!

matraina 09-09-2011 11:23 AM

You have done a great job here. I have yet to try pp.

grandjan 09-09-2011 12:11 PM

Very nicely done. Good job

Iamquilter 09-09-2011 01:43 PM

I think your block fine, keep at it and it will get better and you will feel better about it.

colwoods 09-09-2011 02:05 PM

Awesome block! Gorgeous colors! Leave the paper on to match your seams. Use a smaller stitch and it will make the paper easier to remove. Removing the paper is good TV work. Can't wait to see the finished product.

skoshi 09-09-2011 02:09 PM

Love your block! Yes leave the paper on till the end, it will make things line up much better

DaylilyDawn 09-09-2011 02:14 PM

Your block is so beautiful! I downloaded almost all of the patterns to try. Now to get some ink for my printer so I can print the patterns out.

RobertaMarie 09-09-2011 04:01 PM

Nice pattern and beautiful combination of fabrics! Hope it gets easier for you and you show us the whole quilt when it is done. (I personally don't paper-piece :(, drives me nuts)

gramquilter2 09-09-2011 04:15 PM

I love your block, you did a great job on it, love the colors.

Wanabee Quiltin 09-09-2011 05:00 PM

Wow, that's pretty. Looks great to me.

sewbeit 09-09-2011 05:34 PM

ditto..so congrats on your first block..i too took a class..was all thumbs..i tried it again a couple of times, still not getting it..but im not giving up..try a real sharp needle..real short stitch and see if you either need to move your needle either way or try different feet..maybe even a zipper foot..it's only straght stitching..good luck

mariebaker 09-09-2011 06:21 PM

looks really nice-love your color choices :-D

IBQUILTIN 09-10-2011 01:33 AM

That is a gorgeous block. Maybe try using a fresh needle they dull pretty fast on the paper

Sandyb 09-10-2011 11:57 AM

I am sewing on my new (old) kenmore and for whatever reason, the needle does not follow the middle of the foot.
If you have an older Kenmore make sure your zigzag is exactly on "0" otherwise you may be slightly off in your straight stitch. I don't know if that could be why your needle is off but I know that with my Kenmore I can adjust my zigzag from very slight to very defined.

Joyce Ann 09-11-2011 10:08 AM

Try an open toe foot so you can see the lines. Your block came out beautiful. Keep at it you will grow to love it

alderdweller I think what you have done looks great. Love the pattern too. Feeling your discouragement though as I too have been working on some paper piecing for the last border of the IRR I have been working on. Should have had it finished and posted ages ago so am very pleased that the person I am sending this too has told me not to hurry.

I paper pieced two sides of the border over 2 weeks and when I went to piece it to the quilt I discovered that the pattern doesn't match around the corner so back to the drawing board.
Another week of getting acquainted with "jack the ripper" some readjustment and still not going to happen. Back to the pattern to see if I can figure out what I am doing wrong - darn it I have only left out the centre block. Okay. back to the LQS for more fabric and made up the centre blocks, took apart the first ones to sew these together with the missing segment. Cozying up with "Jack" was all for naught, still a no go so it has been back to the drawing board for me and I have given up paper piecing for now deciding that if I don't concentrate on doing what I do know instead of trying something new then the poor owner of this top is going to think it has been purloined down under never to be seen again
