Felt Question

Can a person use felt instead of batting for placemats?
Thanks for any advice. Bj

I would test a small piece in water before I would sew it. I know in the past, felt was not colorfast or stable even with elmers glue.

I am not even sure if craft FELT is washable.

I have used felt in table runners and placemats.... But not all felt is created equal . You must test it .. make a small sandwich and toss in the wash and dryer. Its the only way you will know how it will perform.

I wouldn't do that. Batting is much more stable. Felt, especially inexpensive felt, is just pressed together, about as stable as dryer lint.

it would depend on what kind of 'felt' you are talking about- not all 'felts' are created equal- craft felt (that you buy in squares in a craft department- is not washable- so, if you want your placemats to be washable it would not work well. wool felt is washable- but kind of expensive to use as a 'batting' instead of the 'main feature' (look up penny rugs to see wool felt placemats/projects)
there is felted cottons, fleece felt, many varieties.
what ever 'felt' you are considering you should first wash it & see what happens (unless of course you do not expect your 'placemats' to ever need laundering) then decide what is best.

I would use flannel, but would likely steer clear of felt.

I bought some off white felt for a project and ended up not using it for the original project, ended up using it in a set of placemats. So far it has worked out fine. They have been washed several times and seem ok. It was felt that was poly and came on a bolt so it is fairly heavy. Buy a small amount of the felt you think may work and wash it to see if it is what you are looking for.
