Any ideas where I can find large pieces if felted wool say 2x3 feet? I have alot of smaller pieces I want to use for appliquéing a nativity scene to hang above our fireplace but am needing this larger piece for the background. Or. Do u have anyother suggestions on what else I could use that would make a sturdy enough background?
Thanks everyone! |
if you have a fabric shop near you that carries wool you could buy a very large piece of 100% wool and then go home and wash it in hot water.
i've found that this method felts it enough to be a background piece for me. |

If you decide to felt your own yardage, take the time to whipstitch the edges together with cotton thread before you start felting it in the washing machine. Sewing the edges together helps discourage any tendencies towards ruffling or flaring that certain wool fabrics do when felted.
Using a contrasting colour cotton thread makes it easy to remove after felting is done using your seam ripper. |
I went to a second hand shop and bought wool suites/jackets. I had shopped the Cancer Society second hand store and happened to find clothing on the clearance rack for just what I needed. I picked up wool jackets for 2.00 and a mens suite that was 50% off I think it was 6.00. Look or the colored tags reduced for the month! Came home and washed them and they worked perfect for my pin cushions.

purchase yardage- take it home toss it into the washing machine with a little detergent and HOT WATER---wash it
rinse it in cold- toss it into a hot dryer- when it comes out you have felted wool to use as you want. |
Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
