figuring for diagonal quilt settings

I want to know how to put my blocks "on-point" for a diagonal setting.
do you have a formula for finding the size triangles to set block to block
without sashings. my blocks are 12.25 " square

Waiting to hear from you

Hello,
I make quite a few quilts that are on point.

You will need formula #1 for the side setting triangles:
multiply the finished block size by 1.414 and add 1.25" for seam allowance. Round up to the nearest 1/4 inch. In your case, you will cut your squares at 18.25, then cut each diagonally twice to get 4 side triangles.

You will need formula #2 for the four corners:
Divide the finished block size by 1.414 and add .875 for seam allowance. Again, round up to the nearest 1/4 inch, In your case, you will cut TWO 9.5" squares, and cut each on the diagonal ONCE for a total of 4 corner triangles.

these measurements are generous and will allow you to trim everything down after they are sewn.

happy sewing,
Jennnie

Go to Victoriana Quilt Designs www.victorianaquiltdesigns.com and they have great information and charts to figure this out. I printed and laminated and have them handy. If you laminate you can figure in erasable pen and erase when done also. Check out the sight and have fun.

Oh Jennie, thank you thank you. This is perfect timing for me today. I had to look twice to see if I posted this question, as I was just at sewing group today and asking for this "formula". I just couldn't remember the mechanics of adding the 7/8 and the 1 1/4.
Thanks again

Susan

Thanks so much for the info. Something we all can use at one time or another.

Quilt Patterns at Victoriana Quilt Designs

I have tried the Victoriana Quilt Designs Web page to find an alphabetical listing or a listing by block size that I used to have bookmarked, but it seems to be hidden or gone now. When I changed computers I am lost!
