Finding a lidded sewing basket
 

I had looked today at Joann and Hobby Lobby for a sewing basket with a lid to keep scissors, pins, etc in but came up empty handed. Any ideas for good places online to look? I'd really like a new one, not used.

I have several from Joann's check their website you probably can them find there.

Not sure how much you want to spend but I love my reproduction shaker sewing box. I have had it for over 10 years and it is still going strong. I also have a pin cushion that is set in a round shaker box.

My mom got me one for Christmas and said she found it at Joann. Maybe ask someone if it's seasonal or can be ordered?

Longaberger baskets are what you want!! I have two with lids and handles that I use for keeping my sewing items (scissors, pins, needles, fabric, etc.) in them. I keep one next to my chair in the living room. One is medium, and one is larger, but not too large at all - not like a picnic basket, more like purse sizes. They are kind of expensive, but they are so worth it. Go here and you will see the one I bought for $54, 5th row down, 1st in row. Mine have handles on them. If you click on that one and go to the bottom of the page, you will see some more with handles on them. I'm not sure if that one has handles. It doesn't look like it does. Just type in: Longaberger baskets with lids and handles in ebay's search bar and a few will show up. The middle one in the top row is similar to the ones I have. They are not lined, but being a quilter, you could line it if you need to. I like mine fine without being lined. And then there is Amazon to check out. But Longaberger is high quality baskets! That's what you want. They are like Amish type baskets. Made very durable! I've had mine for years and years and they are perfect still! You could type in 'Longaberger baskets with lids and handles for sale' in the Google search engine and probably find lots of them. Sorry this is so long. I became so excited that I was able to share about these baskets!

Why not make one???

I did some searching about Longaberger baskets and they are VERY EXPENSIVE!!! The one I showed you on ebay is a steal!! I'd grab that at $55! Go here and see the one on the top row at the end. You go to 'Longaberger' parties, like 'Mary Kay' parties and buy them. Very desirable. Last forever. You can get plastic inserts for them. Probably expensive! Probably why I don't have them. But I almost want to buy the one on ebay for $55. What a good price! Except I already have two. Can't have enough, though! Amazon doesn't have any with lids and handles, already checked for you. Actually I have three; one is a picnic basket. I store kits in it.

I bought a couple of old time wicker picnic baskets and they work great. Of course I got them at thrift store so they were used but you may be able to find new ones. They sure have lots of room.

Try Hancock Fabrics if there is one near you.

I made one for my grandaughter use a dollar tree bucket and covered a cardboard piece for the top. Added a pin cushion for a handle

Try Ebay or maybe your local thrift shop...I found a very lovely one at a second hand store...good luck...

I use a the Longaberger picnic basket for a sewing basket. They have all kinds of baskets with lids.

If you go to nextag and put in "sewing basket," they come up with the lowest price first. Nextag is a shopping website.

I Love the Janet Baskets and you can buy the lids extra, google Janet Baskets and see what you come up with. JoAnn's does have them online. I have one of the large and going to get two more.

It has a tray inside, lots of room for spools of thread and a pin cushion on the inside of the lid.

I love mine, especially when I hand sew in the living room.

In the seventies, I got involved with decoupage and macreme. In one of my classes, we used baskets to make purses. I even lined mine with quilted fabric. Decoupaged a spray of daisies on the lid and "antiqued it." Used navy Rub and Buff on the wood slats. It's still around and houses some of my threads. I'm thinking that it would make me a great sewing basket. Need to put in elastic or something around the inside edges to slip the scissors, etc, into. Or little pockets.

Is this basket big enough to put an 8 inch pair of scissors in and a rotary cutter in?

Go to Sears or Home Depot and get a plastic tool box - Mine is 14 x 18 x 3. Compartments can be customized to hold scissors, and everything else. I keep ALL my sewing stuff in this box and it is instantly portable for transport to quilt sessions, workshops, and my other sewing room. Many in my quilt guild now have the same system. I have a second box for all my threads. Wouldn't even consider returning to the old style "sewing box."

You could check out flea markets for picnic baskets and make your own liner. They are usually pretty reasonable.

I have an old "makeup" suitcase. It has a tray for all the little stuff, bottom holds all my favorite spools and patterns, the inside pockets hold scissors, rotories, rulers, etc. I haul this to retreats and everyone just loves the idea. Also, I have made a "book" using a large crazy oblong square with padding and the inside has crazy square shaped pockets for the seam ripper, small scissors, tape measures, needles, bandaids and one square has been cushioned for pins. A pretty ribbon closes it up. I am creating another with big pockets with flaps for rotories, small cutting mat and small rulers. For the big stuff, another created bag the size of my 18x22 mat (which is glued to a thin piece of plywood with padding attached on the backside for a pressing mat. This bag has pockets for 24" rulers and other "big" stuff. It closes with 2 very long zippers. I can grab my gear and be out of the house to retreat in about 10 minutes. Get creative!

Would you be interested in making your own? "Lacelady" has a very nice tute here on the board. "Fabric covered needlework box" It is quite nice, and could be adjusted for size. I spent the better part of yesterday afternoon going thru the whole thread. I plan to make one soon.

I see baskets with lids and a handle all the time at Joanns. The one I have is a black basket with a black and white Toile padded fabric top. They have them on sale often or you can use a coupon for one if it's not on sale already. Maybe your Joanns ran out of them. They are usually very easy to find there. I was at Joanns yesterday and walked right by some.

I've even seen them at Walmart in their sewing department if your store still carries sewing supplies.

You don't have to spend a fortune on a sewing basket. You can put the money to better use...like more fabric stash. lol

I received 2 for Christmas with handles one from Joanne's one from Hancocks, was at Hancocks yesterday and saw a dozen or so, around 20.00$

I have outgrown every cutsie one that I have bought from Joann's, etc. I have a wicker picnic type basket that I have modified to meet my needs. Takes a bit of effort BUT you can get one big enought that you don't outgrow it.

If you have any Tuesday Morning shops near you, check there. I just saw several at the one near me in MI. You might also check the website for Clotilde's, they have just about every notion & sewing gadget imaginable! Happy shopping!

O M G I have two longaberger's in my garage and I didn't have a clue what they were worth! Ha ha ha What a scream. I have seen many sewing baskets at the thrift shops that are made of wood and have legs and when you open them they are on hinges to reveal the all of the drawers on that side. Very nice, but I have no place to store them.

I use a clear plastic and crome folding holder my late friend kitty bought me. It is simular to the old time knitting holders with lots of pockets on the outside. It works great for me. The larger projects I use a big decorative hat box. Concealed and handy in the family room.

Becky, I bought this toolbox at JoAnns, and I LOVE it! I carry everything in it from needles, pins, scissors of all sizes, pencils, basting spray, thimbles, glue sticks, tape measure, bobbins, rulers,...you name it. It looks like a fishing tackle box (mine is purple and green) and I couldn't live without it. You will be amazed at what you can fit inside. A friend of mine who saw mine and bought one for herself said that it was the best money she ever spent. You just pick it up and go, and when it's open, you can see everything in it. (The whole bottom is one big open space for your bigger scissors etc.). I don't think you'd be sorry spending the money on it.

I found mine years age at Walmart!!!

I found a nice basket that has a lid, handles and is about 14 inches wide and 12 inches deep.....99 cents at the thrift store....

Ooh.... the knitting carrier! That might have to be a special treat to me someday...I have an open Shaker box my mother gave me about 30 years ago - it still looks as nice as when it was new. It sits on my chair side table to corral little things - pens, lip gloss, nail clippers, TV remote, etc.

My minds eye is seeing fishing baskets like you see in pictures of people fly fishing for trout.
