That would be so cute! If you can find that large gingham, it would be perfect, I think, as a nice wide border.

Great find. I wouldn't add anymore blocks. But you could add an interesting border. I am thinking something in the red family. I think black would be too harsh.

I would use a solid border matched to one of the soft greens to try to quiet it down a bit. Lovely quilt - what a bargain!

Maybe use plain ole muslin? Great find... Sometimes we find 'em & sometimes we don't... Good luck..

Whatever you choose, please post so we can see how you made it your way! Rescuing this top is enough for me to just have a big smile.

I love the quilt! A border would be fine, and secure all the many threads that could come out of the edges as you quilt. I think I'd keep the border simple - one border no more than 6" wide - because the quilt is so busy.

Can't wait to see the finished product!

What about using one of the red 1930's repro fabrics? While I doubt that this top is THAT old, I think reproduction fabrc would complement it nicely. The size you mentioned is very close to a twin-size, so a relatively narrow border should finish that out nicely.

Or....

(I know some of you will want to holler at this suggestion...)

Depending on the condition of the fabric and/or seams... you could find a teddy bear pattern (or a cat or a puppy) and cut the pattern from the top. Patchwork teddies are ADORABLE!! I'm looking for some teddy patterns myself right now to use up two flimsies I got at a yard sale several years ago.

What a cool find! If it's definitely your wish to enlarge it, how about a 30s pale yellow floral 3" border and a brown pin dot binding? That would keep the vintage vibe. Or find some turquoise gingham for border and a red bandana print for binding? If it were mine, I think I'd just bind it. Pick a color you like to "frame" it and keep it solid. I like the muslin suggestions.

What a beautiful top and a great find. To finish it out and enlarge the size, I would add several rather wide borders in various solid colors to match colors in the print.
